Purchased an 18tb external drive with an Exos drive. Shucked and drive just failed 4 months later. No warranty of course.

Beware! These drives do not have the middle set of mounting holes on the sides.

Nothing wrong with Seagate, as long as it's not their consumer drives.

The Skyhawk line, however, focuses more on continuous writes rather than reads. You probably won't notice if you're just using them to download content, but they wouldn't be as good for hosting a database, for instance.

At this price, there's no reason not to put them on RAID.

It is when you buy an external hard drive and open the enclosure (often voiding the warranty) to pull the drive out and use it as an internal drive. People do it because manufacturers put high end server/NAS drives in their externals and sell them at a lower price point than the equivalent internal drives.
yes and it's super freakin easy to put the drive back into the enclosure and send it in for RMA.

why wouldn't you keep the enclosure until the warranty ran out?

May just be a rhetorical question on your part, but if not, well

• Because you don't have enough storage space for all those chucked hulls
• Because you broke a bunch of tabs when chucking and think it may not go together ever again
• Because you don't think the drive will fail prematurely
• etc et nauseam

All that said, yes, of course one should keep the shell until warranty end.

Refurbished drives will often have their hours set to zero. On the good side, it means someone probably checked them out. On the bad side, you don't know how many hours are actually on them.Personally, I'm very firmly in the never ever seagate camp.I'm willing to believe that their enterprise drives are more or less okay; but they historically have been shady-af in their handling of flawed drives. I don't hate my data or my time enough to save a few dollars purchasing a seagate drive.

Why no warranty? Was it because you damaged the external drive while shucking? Could have use the external drive as an external drive and shuck it after warranty period.
His no warranty comment makes no sense at all.

These drives needs to go below $80. It's too high at this price point.

I'll buy 10 if it's under $80 each.

Better yet 14tb should be $80. I take 20 at this price point.

Would there be any issues using this as a desktop hard drive?

shucking is when you take an oyster out of its shell to eat it.

Okay I know I haven't been looking at HDD prices lately but can someone confirm if the prices this guy is trying to find stuff at pie in the sky or actually achievable?
