Item Dimensions listed as 20"H x 14"W x 7"D

Not sure if the dimensions include handles, straps, etc. Compare to personal item size limits generated from ChatGPT:

Airline Personal Item Size Limit (inches) Notes
Alaska Airlines 17 x 13 x 9 Must fit under seat
Allegiant Air 16 x 15 x 7 Strictly enforced
American Airlines 18 x 14 x 8 Should fit under seat
Avelo Airlines 14 x 9 x 9 Strictest limit
Breeze Airways 17 x 13 x 8 Must fit under seat
Delta Air Lines 18 x 14 x 8 No official size listed, but this is recommended
Frontier Airlines 18 x 14 x 8 Strict enforcement; anything larger = carry-on fee
Hawaiian Airlines 18 x 14 x 8 One personal item + one carry-on allowed
JetBlue Airways 17 x 13 x 8 Must fit under seat
Southwest Airlines 18.5 x 13.5 x 8.5 Fairly generous
Spirit Airlines 18 x 14 x 8 Carefully checked; anything larger = fee
Sun Country Airlines 17 x 13 x 9 Carry-on is extra; personal item included
United Airlines 17 x 10 x 9 Must fit under seat; tightly enforced for basic economy
Not that this is going to be a comfortable or even reliable bag in the long term, but in defense of the post, it states CARRY ON. So not being passed as a personal item.
Need explanation as to how it was permanently damaged? It comes folded, that's it. I find these little whining about little things annoying as such complaints and returns make it harder for them to keep these affordable

Bought this three years ago for $46. It is well worth it. I used it many times including a month of traveling in Europe. No issues as a carry on

This will be fine walking from the plane to the Uber but would recommend a pack with a waistbelt if you need to walk any further than that.

Mine came folded in half also in a little plastic bag. But it wasn't really permanent once I started stuffing stuff in it and use it a few times it kind of stayed put.

The dimensions translate to 32L not 40L.

I just flew United to Japan and back on a very large 787. Not one person had their carry-on checked for size.

However, on the plane if it doesn't fit underneath it has to go in the storage bins during takeoff.

I bought this in March on a SD for $26, and used it for the first time on a short two day business trip in place of my normal hard shell carry on. It definitely served its purpose. I thought the backpack option would be more convenient on sidewalks, in and out of uber etc. which it was. I will say with a little weight in the bag the shoulder straps got a bit uncomfortable after walking a good while through the terminal. In the airport on smooth surfaces the hard case roller bag would have been more convenient . Personally I would not use this as my personal item even if I got past the gate with it. Unless you don't care about having any room for your feet I'd stick to using it as a carry on instead. With a normal mid size backpack as my personal item I can still fit my feet in the space under the seat in front of me. Not possible with this bag, but to each their own. In the end, it's a nice option to have for a pretty cheap price. With the suitcase style zipper etc, definitely more "packable" than a traditional backpack.

Was exactly my thoughts when I used mine for a Vegas trip. The walk from the parking lot to the hotel reception at Caesars Palace then to my room my back was killing me. I thought it might be easier with a backpack but it was more tiring than pushing a spinner hard case across the floor.

Very specific details like this are exactly the kind of thing I would not trust ChatGPT for lol.

Picked a random one and tried to find Avelo's personal item size, it's 17″L x 13″H x 9″W, not 14x9x9.
https://www.aveloair.com/help/carry-on-bags

Looked up Hawaiian's and it's not listed anywhere on the internet. Probably also made up by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is really great for a lot of things, especially broadly established things like how to start your own business or talking through electrical engineering or calculus problems, but it is absolutely awful for super specific esoteric knowledge like personal item bag sizes by airlines.

In general I have found that to be true, also, on international RT flights from the USA to Asia. It depends on whether the airline is counting "personal items" or "carry-on" items. Recently on SWA I saw many people with their personal bag that was not going to go under their seats and no one was challenged. But, I think if you are pushing the rules you should be prepared if the gate agent requires you to do a baggage check with a carry on piece.
