For work I'm switching phones multiple times a year.
This Echo Auto works best with iPhones and flagship Google and Samsung phones. Other top tier Android phones have had issues with disconnections. Also if you have multi user enabled on your Android it seems to make the disconnections quite frequent.

The 1st Gen device has worked great in my old Jeep that I had put an upgraded stereo into that features handsfree but I would have to touch thru a bunch of menus while driving to dial a call or change music streaming channels. So directing the robot to make my calls and change my music instead has been worth the $20 bucks. I am hoping this 2nd gen will improve teh Bluetooth connectivity. 90% of the time it has stayed connected.

Amazon killing the list API has really made my desire to invest more in the Alexa infrastructure go down. Previously I could just tell Alexa to add things to my shopping List, and they would appear in the app of my choice on all of my platforms. Now the bed is turned off I don't have much use :-(

wow, I clicked on this thread to say the _exact same thing_.
Worst thing to me is that I have to disconnect it (turn off phone Bluetooth usually) to have my phone reliably understand what I'm saying. If I don't, 75% of the time it will do the ding like it is listening, but the speech never gets through to the phone. e.g. texting someone I'm on my way etc.
I hear ya, but my vehicle has no Bluetooth audio connection built in. When this (or the gen1 I guess) works as it should, I prefer it to any Bluetooth > aux adapters I've used. Then there is fun stuff like If I get into my car and see that my kid's lights are on or I forgot to lock the front door, I don't even have to take my phone out of my pocket.

…when it works 🤣
My car only has Aux input so I can't connect my phone for the car speakers. But this can! I use mine to tell Alexa to close the garage door and arm my security system. Stream music, ask the weather. All without taking my phone out too.

1st gen. Not sure benefit of upgrading.

Same. My desire for 2nd gen would be having a device that works like it should. If you don't have any issues with gen1, stick with it!

I'm assuming if my car already has wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, this isn't needed right? Or is there something this offers that they don't?
If you have a car with ACP or AA or even BT then this has minimal value IMO. My prior older car only had a AUX input and the gen 1 of this was great. Once every couple of weeks it did freeze but a simple unplug and it was working again. If you have an old car this is a great product but anything with modern tech and I don't see the use of it.

The first gen alexa auto was a hot piece of shit.
Also Amazon capped me for "support " after my bad review basically to tell me that they are getting rid of my review.

Since then I consider reviews on Amazon products accordingly.

I have the Gen 1 since its launch and it works reasonably well for me. The only time it seems to say that Alexa is not available is when my cell reception is too poor for data streaming.

Are there any advantages to having a Gen 2 device other than looks/physical size? My Gen 1 unit is tucked away nicely and is barely seen anyway. I'm wondering if there is any real functionality change?

A very misleading product page. There's a box that the microphone end piece is attached to that makes this thing considerably bulkier than they lead you to believe. So tucking the cord away neatly can be a challenge depending on where you plan to mount the microphone.

I will say that if you get this, buying Garmin's ODB USB adapter might help to keep things looking clean if your USB ports are way out of the way.

I have the first gen and I use it mainly as a Bluetooth receiver. My ('08) car has Bluetooth for phone, but not for other audio. I use the echo auto for audio streaming, and it works reasonably well. I don't use Alexa voice control much, but as a receiver it stays connected and switches between phone and audio streaming just fine.
I anyone can convince me that Gen 2 has additional features, I will upgrade!

I have the 1st gen that recently started acting up. I use mine to play music, open/close the garage and arm/disarm the alarm.

Ever since the first gen of Echo Auto, I have yet to see the difference between these, and the 2nd gen Echo Dot. The Echo Dot 2nd gen powers just fine on the cheapest USB power plug dongle. It connects to Wi-Fi and BT equally well and keeps its connection. I've used that combo with my 2nd gen, a BT speaker and a Wi-Fi hotspot (Mobley) for years on long trips. Never saw the need for a dedicated device.

[Edit] I should add that my two vehicles are both GMs that do not have BT.

Couldn't agree more. I have two first gen devices. When they work, they're great. But they so frequently disconnect I honestly never use them anymore. Probably about every other time I try to use it, it tells me it can't connect to my phone and I have to open the Alexa app and re-set up. This is with multiple phones and multiple echo autos.

I've apologized to people I've recommended them to.

Maybe the second gen devices fix some of that.
Same. Mine would never connect correctly, then would just drop off mid drive, requiring messing with the app to get reconnected. Great distraction for highway driving - thing was trashed within a couple weeks

I was so excited to preorder the first gen Alexa auto a few years ago… and it was terrible. Miles behind even the echo dot.

I'm sure this is better, but I'm not ready to get my hopes up again.

For things like these you need to be absolutely in the mindset of using it all the time otherwise it will just remain in the vehicle.

Can't you run a USB c to 3.5mm cable? assuming you have a USB C phone

True. But My phone is on the dash mount and my aux port is inside my center arm rest. I'd be a long ass line. Instead, I have my echo auto right in front of my arm rest on the center console for a cleaner look.
