For work I'm switching phones multiple times a year.
This Echo Auto works best with iPhones and flagship Google and Samsung phones. Other top tier Android phones have had issues with disconnections. Also if you have multi user enabled on your Android it seems to make the disconnections quite frequent.

The 1st Gen device has worked great in my old Jeep that I had put an upgraded stereo into that features handsfree but I would have to touch thru a bunch of menus while driving to dial a call or change music streaming channels. So directing the robot to make my calls and change my music instead has been worth the $20 bucks. I am hoping this 2nd gen will improve teh Bluetooth connectivity. 90% of the time it has stayed connected.

Amazon killing the list API has really made my desire to invest more in the Alexa infrastructure go down. Previously I could just tell Alexa to add things to my shopping List, and they would appear in the app of my choice on all of my platforms. Now the bed is turned off I don't have much use :-(

I bought the first generation of this and found it redundant to my Android+Bluetooth setup (and a lot more finicky). In my experience it's easier to just say "hey Google" and get what I want done that way.

Couldn't agree more. I have two first gen devices. When they work, they're great. But they so frequently disconnect I honestly never use them anymore. Probably about every other time I try to use it, it tells me it can't connect to my phone and I have to open the Alexa app and re-set up. This is with multiple phones and multiple echo autos.

I've apologized to people I've recommended them to.

Maybe the second gen devices fix some of that.
I just use the Amazon music app with Alexa activated and listen to the music that way through my phone and ask Alexa to change the music or whatever I need at the time. I don't have no issues with my phone Bluetooth very satisfied so I'm going to pass on the second generation and by the way I do have first generation and it's still in the box just never took it out like I said the phone works so good.

Are they killing this in the future or are you talking specifically about the Echo Auto devices? I'm still able to add to my shopping list with my other devices (ex: Dots and Shows) and it's one of my favorite functions. If this disappears, it will be difficult to find enough utility to continue to invest in Alexa ecosystem.

I'm assuming if my car already has wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, this isn't needed right? Or is there something this offers that they don't?
I have wireless Carplay and still use this. Carplay controls my car (music, GPS). This controls my HOUSE: I can dial in my thermostats before I get home, and open/close my garage door. The phone never leaves my pocket.

The only downside I've found is that my car stereo plays at half volume until Alexa wakes up. So I'll listen to music, and it'll sound like it's on volume level 5, I'll say "Alexa, what time is it," and then my music will go to volume 10 where it belongs.

it's for third party tie ins to the shopping list. I use ToDoIst which is a great crossplatform list program. AS of July 1, the alexa tie in no longer works. If you use Alexa's built in app, you should be fine.

I was hoping to use this as a microphone for my calls. Given that this has multiple mics because my headunit's mic sucks balls. Unfortunately it's not and is only used for voice commands.

I'm not going to return it because it's still nice for hands free for my other car.

I run both Wireless AA and Echo Auto gen 2. (on a mid-spec Moto Stylus) It takes some finesse to get both co-existing and working- but it's really nice once it all falls into place.

I vastly prefer Alexa compared to the Android voice assistant. And you can set Echo Auto to choose which navigation app (Maps or Waze) to use when you ask for directions.

Been using Echo Auto since 2019.
