Which is better this Sony or the Denon AVR-X1700H for a dollar more?

Hmmm, I have the Pioneer Elite 301 and have been contemplating an upgrade. I used to always have Sony's flagship receivers (not from the top tier though) and have always liked them.

*edit*
After thoroughly looking at this brand new flagship receiver and my 3yr + old receiver from Pioneer, I will keep it for now. This receiver is very lackluster and how it commands a regular price tag of $899 is beyond me. Very lacking.

This is a very thorough review that includes a comparison to the x1700 around the 10:00 mark...

I bought this because it is the first Sony receiver to have their S-Center Out connection, which allows you to use your Sony TV's speakers as the center channel.

I have the A80J OLED which has the S-Center input (the A90J has actual speaker wire connectors).

So now the 5.1 setup in the family room is complete. I didn't have to upgrade my TV or put a center channel on the mantel.

Good price. I wanted to love this but returned it due to loud pops when switching inputs then the 360 sound feature has an audible hiss that can be heard during quiet scenes. Got the Denon - AVR-S970H last month for $399 instead.

There's a lot to like about Sony's receivers but they need to pony up and license room correction. Can't consider them without it.

Pretty sure this has their version of RC. They probably reverse engineered Audyssey or Dirac. Some reviews claim it is on par with them. I think you have to get the ES line to get the top tier version though.

0.9% THD with 1 channel driven LOL

I'm used to manufacturers claiming performance numbers based on 2 channels, which is very lame, but 1 channel? Come on!

YT review I referenced above said it was 120 wpc in stereo and something like 165 worth 1 channel driven.

My denon 970 is being delivered tomorrow. Does anyone know how the zones work with the Sony? Will it play two 5.1.1 zones at once?

This and the ES both use DCAC IX 360 Spatial Sound Mapping for RC.

every home theater AVR sold today from a major manufacturer has some type of room correction software built in:

Yamaha - YPAO
Denon / Marantz (Same company) - Audyssey
Onkyo / Pioneer (Same company) - Accu-EQ (lower models) or Dirac live (Upper models)
Sony - Digital Cinema Auto Calibration
