The more modern mesh routers use a separate dedicated band for Wi-Fi Backhaul (usually triband). This one is dual band and somehow selects an "optimum" band for backhaul.

——

How does it choose which wireless band is the backhaul? why can't i set this in the app?
The Deco S4 is a dual-band Mesh WiFi system, and utilizes intelligent algorithms to determine which band is optimal for backhaul transmission between each Deco node. This is determined automatically by the firmware and cannot be manually set. If you would prefer a Deco modal with a dedicated WiFi backhaul, we suggest considering one of our Tri-Band Deco models, such as the Deco X68 or Deco X90.

I have Deco AX5700 ( Wifi-6 ) and I think this Deco S4 ( Wifi-5 ) is compatible, so I can extend the range.

My parents have had this for a few months with no complaints on their 300 mbps connection. Definitely recommend.

anyone know if these are 3 identical routers? such that I could set up a mesh of 2 nodes and then use the third at a smaller apartment?

Yes, all Deco models are compatible with each other and can be mixed and matched on the same network. Do keep in mind that the S4 is dual-band whereas the AX5700 is tri-band. The lack of a third band might (or might not) cause issues throughout your home depending on interference, distance, etc. You could try it and see, but the safest bet is to get a tri-band Deco to add on.

They should be. According to the manual for the deco model I have they should all work together and independently.

Yes they are - I have this setup. When you set them up the Deco software sets up a "master" but that can change if you need to move them or something

I use mine with Ethernet backhaul and have had zero problems but even briefly in wireless mesh it was good too

S4: 2.4 GHz (300 Mb/s), single 5 GHz (867 Mb/s). Max download speed would be capped at half of 867Mb/s if using wireless backhaul.
M9: 2.4 GHz (400 Mb/s), dual 5 GHz (867 Mb/s). Max speed can reach 867Mb/s in theory.
Plus M9 has life time HomeCare for free. S4 should be comparable with M5 which is also single 5G band, but M5 does have HomeCare as well.
BH Photo has refurbed M9 for $130, which is a better deal for sub Gigabit Wifi 5 mesh system.

Are you trying to extend the range of the G3100? I would use the E3200 extender.
