Just shucked. WD140EDGZ. White, 14TB, 5400, helium, 256, CMR, SATA 6Gb/s.
FYI there appears to be a limit associated to Address. I couldnt not figure it out for the longest time until I changed address on my second order. Observations:

- max order of (3) for non-business account on first tranaction to Address1
- able to get to checkout (1) additional drive to Address1 for second transaction
- anything with qty 2-3 to Address1 for second transaction returns an error and cannot continue
- order for (3) drives to Address2 on second transaction has no issues
Here is the previous post for information on the 15% off coupon and various discussion regarding the drive:

Just picked up 2 of these at my local store, manager had no idea about the coupon but once I showed him on their website he manually changed the price, didn't even scan a coupon. Will try my luck again tomorrow for a couple more

Does the 15% discount apply to orders with multiple drives?

Edit: If I buy 3 drives, do I get 15% off the entire order? Or just 15% off of 1 drive in that order?
1 coupon per drive. you need 3 coupons, and probably 3 transactions.

Crystal Disk showed the same for me @ 7200rpm, I'm going to do an extended SMART then put this in my unRAID array and run the disk benchmark to see what the throughput is. I have 14TB HC530, which is 7200rpm and also last year 14TB EDFZ, which shows as 5400rpm to compare to the EDGZ I got today.

Awesome...
I can have 14TB of my data disappear when the delicate HDD fails for any and all reasons.
Are you suggesting storing in a cloud vs. HD? How about having a backup or RAID?

Thanks for this. So none of the stores near me have it in stock it seems. Am I able to buy online and take in receipt and get a refund for the trade in value?
just buy it online. and get a refund and then re-buy it in store.

I ran a Crystal Disk test on each drive before I shucked and thankfully had zero lemons. Perf was limited by my USB3 connection, not the drive itself. In an 8-way RAID-Z2 they'll get several hundred MB/sec throughput which is fine for the right use cases. ZFS lovers remember, many-drive RAIDZ1/2/3 arrays have only as many IOPS as one drive --- these aren't really supposed to be your zippy OS drives, VM/iSCSI drives, etc. They're just meant to store a ton of data. Perfect for 4-16 drive RAIDs in RAID5/RAIDZ1 or RAIDZ2, depending on drive count.

I see people on this thread knocking huge drives for losing huge quantities data on drive failure, but those people are missing the point: you _need_ redundancy, no matter how large your HDDs are. Otherwise you're playing with fire. If you think $200 is too much for a single drive, buy two smaller drives for $200 instead, and mirror or backup your data.

Which would you pick and why?

I'd get the easystores without hesitation for the following reasons:
  • These will likely be cheaper than Reds
  • Your 920+ will be 100% limited throughput-wise by the gigabit Ethernet connections, not these drives
  • If you're planning on using that 920+ for anything other than massive media storage (ie, if you want to export iSCSI shares to run VMs or whatnot), then you should probably get one NVMe SSD to plugin to it. Not sure why you'd ever need two (maybe one as read cache, one as write?)

At the register at Best Buy in Salem, OR - clerk said the system wouldn't allow a discount of any kind on this item - because of the insanely low price. Said the price was already at their cost and the register wouldn't allow the price to go lower. I didn't feel like asking for a manager override…

Still a great price and no sales tax. Would have been super slick at $165 though…

This is incorrect. I ordered 3 on one order and 2 on the second transaction and all are ready to ship both same address and name
