I have 2 of these units, long story short it wouldn't work with a new opener so I ditched them and went with Meross.
I saw a pile of these units at a local WM yesterday in the clearance section for $9.

You get full function with this product: open/close, status alerts, set schedules, admin multiple users, etc.
There are only fees if you want to use a compatible camera with MyQ service, and/or if you want to use IFTTT integration (may still be free for a "limited" time though).

The sensor for telling if the garage is open or not for Meross is a long cable that you have to run from the unit to the bottom of your garage door. It comes with some horrible adhesive that wasn't working on either my floor or areas around where it needed to be placed so I had a constant struggle to keep moving the sensor to make sure it was working ok. I finally gave up on the product when adjusting it I got a pretty nasty shock from wiring that was exposed around the sensor. The MyQ is far simpler and cleaner. The sensor is wireless and just sticks onto the garage door.
I can't speak on any fees as I have a last gen model but I'm in need for another one of these for another garage door so I'm going to pick this up.
