Great on Kindle

A preeminent scientist—and the world's most prominent atheist—asserts the irrationality of belief in God and the grievous harm religion has inflicted on society, from the Crusades to 9/11.

With rigor and wit, Dawkins examines God in all his forms, from the sex-obsessed tyrant of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children, buttressing his points with historical and contemporary evidence. The God Delusion makes a compelling case that belief in God is not just wrong but potentially deadly. It also offers exhilarating insight into the advantages of atheism to the individual and society, not the least of which is a clearer, truer appreciation of the universe's wonders than any faith could ever muster.

"Pascal's Wager is a philosophical argument presented by Blaise Pascal that suggests it is more rational to believe in God than not, even if one is unsure of God's existence. It argues that the potential gains of believing (eternal happiness) far outweigh any potential losses (finite sacrifices in this life) if God exists, and if God does not exist, the losses from believing are finite while the potential gains from not believing are negligible."

as someone who believes in god, I would argue that if you go your entire life believing in God you have to give up a lot of opportunities which evil could give you some serious advantage. not like murdering children evil, but like getting ahead by telling the white lie like claiming that you can operate some machines faking it till you make it, and then having that advantage. operating without a conscious gives you a certain degree of opportunities. in the end I don't think they're worth it but if you do it well enough..

I agree with the sentiment you are expressing about materialism. I do think people should be loving, compassionate, and wise without tainting those ideas with any further complexity. It's being good, plain and simple. I also feel everyone is at a different spot of that spectrum and ultimately each person can turn around when they are ready, that can be anytime when the moment is right. Until then, people should practice restraint and grit to their best and even better than they think they can. Practicing to be good requires time and the right ingredients, much as a seed that grows on fertile ground. Practice requires repetitiveness and mindfulness.

Pascal's Wager assumes a single specific God who rewards belief and punishes disbelief, but there are countless possible gods and religions with conflicting requirements — believing in the wrong one could have the same eternal "loss" as disbelief. It also treats belief as a simple choice, ignoring that genuine belief can't be willed purely for self-interest.
  • Moral integrity problem – Believing "just in case" is insincere and might be seen by a god as hypocrisy, which could be worse than honest disbelief.
  • Value of truth – The wager prioritizes self-interest over seeking what is actually true; living according to false beliefs could cause real harm in this life.
  • Finite-life costs – Religion can demand significant sacrifices of time, resources, and personal freedoms, which may not be "negligible" if the payoff is uncertain.
  • Mutually exclusive claims – Many religions say only their own followers are saved, making the wager unclear on which god to bet on.
  • Probability issue – If God's existence is extremely improbable, the infinite reward is outweighed by the near-zero chance of it occurring, depending on how you weigh probabilities in decision theory.

problem is, iirc, false piety is one of the greatest sins.

That is assuming people practice what they preach. I have known many religious people who are absolutely vile human beings. Personally, in my life at least, I have not seen an obvious correlation between how religious someone is and how "good" they are. I am anxious to read this book!

Worth reading some of the context behind the idea:

if you cant practice what you preach, my opinion, stop preaching it. preach what you practice instead.
