Garmin has stopped pushing software upgrades for this gen (Epix 2 and Fenix 7). You'll get important stuff like bug fixes and security updates. But only newest gens (like Fenix 8 and FR 570/970) get constant upgrades.
I got the Epix 2 non-Pro last year and I'm happy with it. I don't know what I'm missing out on.

Athletes. If you don't care about the watch or feature set why bother to comment. It's a great watch with ridiculously long battery life

Man... that's still just a whole lot to pay for a timepiece that's so quickly disposable.
I think your comment is geared towards smartwatches in general, though keep in mind for athletes these Garmins can have legitimate lifecycles of 10+ years. I do hear what you're saying, but I would not put it in the Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch class.

These things are tanks. I think I had my fenix 3 sapphire for multiple years before I sold it and upgraded to an epix pro. Love the LED light feature and I use it way more than I thought I would. While it doesn't have a lot of the features of some of the smart watches, I came straight back to Garmin for the battery life.

The battery life is definitely awesome! I wish Samsung would figure out how to even get half the number of days of the Garmin. I wear my galaxy watch ultra most of the time because I prefer the screen and some of the features but I'm lucky if I get 2 days with light use.

I have both also and unless I'm using it for a sport the Garmin doesn't come out. I'd rather charge my ultra every two days then have to suffer through trying to use my Garmin. It can't even handle the most basic of smartwatch tasks, it doesn't even have time stamps on notifications. Also like someone else mentioned it's retired even though it didn't come out that long ago. Also there's the connect+ nonsense. The whole idea before was you were paying a large amount for a watch but everything else would be free forever, not anymore. If you don't need it for sports tracking there's no way it's worth the money, I'll never get another Garmin.

For long battery life, excellent AMOLED display, for good set of notifications that you can customize exactly to your needs using the app on your phone, for a super nice flashlight that I use every single night, for good display stats and GPS tracking, sports tracking... Buy an Amazfit T-Rex 2 or T-Rex 3 watch.

There are others in the Amazfit line as well for running, general fitness or better aesthetics but I like the T-Rex series for it's ruggedness and features and it's sub 200 price. Garmin does not give you anything extra over an Amazfit for more than triple the price.

Interesting. I'm not familiar with this watch. Outside of better battery life how do they compare to the Galaxy Ultra feature wise? I ask, because I have a Samsung phone but I'm certainly not tied to their watch ecosystem if the Amazfit does all the same things with better battery life

Amazfit has been around for over 15 years. I think they were an offshoot of Xiaomi.

Their watches are comparable to fitness watches with their features matching Garmin, Fitbit, etc. for fitness activities like running, hiking, and overall health tracking.

Amazfit does not compete against Samsung ultra or Apple watches which are in the smartwatch category rather than the fitness watch category.

I think Samsung/Apple don't compete with Amazfit. They can barley track a nights worth of sleep before you have to recharge.

Meanwhile...I charge my Amazfit GTR 4 LE ($149 - $50 rebate = $99) once every 2 weeks, if that. So twice a month. I've had it for 2 years. I had the GTR3 before, and it too was excellent. Amazfit's just do...everything well. They're not the "leader" in any one category, but they have an entry in every category. So while Garmin may be the "most accurate" - Amazfit does darn well in the category. With the new Helios band, it might actually be better. App ecosystem goes to Apple/Samsung. But ZeppOS allows for open development on their dev platform, and it's growing fast. At the end of the day, I can track my snowboarding, running, and every exercise I can imaging on my Amazfit. I can track my sleep. I can track my activity levels. I can control my spotify. I can get/reply/answer text messages AND phone calls from my watch. There's an ECG if you know how to enable it. It's OS layout is customizable. The app on the phone works great. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about them. The best part is they're cheap, I can get 4x GTR4's which I know last me at least 2 years, for the price of this discounted/discontinued Garmin.

The days of $1000 smart watches are over. The days of 2 day battery life are over. If you find yourself in either category buying today, you're doing it wrong imho.

I have the Active 2 and it's been fantastic. I get just under 10 days of battery (though I'll charge it if I'm not doing anything and it's below 30%), the screen is bright enough to read in ANY light, and it tracks every health item I actually care about. It looks good, doesn't weigh a ton, and the interface is snappy and never lags. I have absolutely zero complaints in the 3 months I've had it. Should I need to replace it, I wouldn't hesitate to get whatever its replacement is. I thought about getting the T-Rex 2, but I'm not that active and I have tiny wrists, so the Active 2 made more sense for a lot less money.
