Would the Corsair memory be a performance upgrade to the memory below? I am currently using the Crucial with XMP running at 3200 paired with an AMD 5600x CPU.

So tempting, but I'm currently using G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) 3600MHz CL16-19-19-39 on a 5700x3d and I'm not sure the performance hit will be worth the extra memory dropping to 3200MHz Frown

But I'm running on a 3080 FE at 1440p so I think the hit would be minimal. What say you all, worth the upgrade?

The Crucial Ballistix has lower latency (faster CL times) at 16-18-18-36. I run that ram myself and I really wish I could get another pair to go to 64gb with that timing.

But if you need more than 32gb, then the timing is only one factor to consider. For example: if you are doing stable diffusion AI stuff that offload to RAM, then hitting swap will kill your SSD eventually.

So I've been waiting to purchase some RAM for one of my unraid servers.

I was going to get 8 modules of ECC UDIMM (16gb each).

Seem like this would also be ok? I'd be doing 4 sticks instead of 8 though since the motherboard only supports 128gb
Should be fine as long as you are sure your MB supports 32gb per slot and you are ok that these aren't ECC. Consensus is that ECC is unnecessary for homelab use.

i have been eyeing this for 3 months, lowest was $90. I have 32gb ram with 150 edge tabs open + VS code + Spark mail app + OneNote app, these consume 80% of my RAM. Tempted to update but also thinking of switching MB for DDR5 :/

📊 Performance Trade-Offs:
✅ What You Gain:
Massive capacity boost: Going from 16GB → 64GB is a 4x jump. This is huge for:
High-res texture modding
Video editing/rendering
Heavy multitasking (browsers + VMs + dev work)
Running modern AAA games with background tasks
❌ What You Lose:
Speed: Going from 3600MHz CL16 (tight for Ryzen) to 3200MHz CL16 isn't drastic, but:
The 5700X3D (like all 3D V-Cache chips) loves fast RAM — especially 3600 CL16
You're taking a ~5–8% potential hit in gaming scenarios that are CPU-limited, especially 1080p and sometimes 1440p
Latency increase can mildly impact 1% lows
🎮 Your Setup-Specific Analysis:
1440p + RTX 3080 FE: You're more GPU-limited in most modern games at this resolution, so the RAM speed difference will be minimal in gaming — maybe 1–3 FPS variance at most
5700X3D is so cache-heavy that it's less sensitive to RAM speed than most other Ryzen chips
If you're doing any kind of content creation, streaming, or multitasking — 64GB is a big win
If you only game, and you're not running into RAM limits, sticking with the 3600MHz may make more sense
✅ Verdict:
Upgrade if:
You're hitting RAM limits (browsing + games + streaming or work)
You want to future-proof for heavier games or creative workloads
You won't miss squeezing out that last 2–3% FPS in some CPU-bound games
Hold off if:
You strictly game and value every last frame
You aren't seeing any signs of RAM being maxed
TL;DR: At 1440p with a 3080 and 5700X3D, the real-world gaming difference between 3600 CL16 and 3200 CL16 is negligible, and the capacity gain from 16GB → 64GB more than makes up for the slight loss in speed for most users. You're likely making a good trade if you have any productivity use or multitask often.

These seem contradictory. I've heard the latter, that fast RAM doesn't matter as much for X3D chips. Did you use an LLM to come up with this?

Is this generally good ram? I don't stay on top of this stuff anymore? I have 4x8 (for 32) with my and 5900x and gtx 3080. Would moving to this be beneficial for gaming at all?
if youre running close to the 32gb limit, then yes they would benefit you

Very tempted - have 4*16GB 3200 memory in my system right now. This is the Absolute end of the cheap DDR4 memory. By the end of the year, this will be $150, as companies have stopped making DDR4 memory. Or at least the big name companies (SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron). Since most people have moved over to DDR5, they are looking to clear out stock at this point.
its not the end. you can find used ones on ebay

That's the gamble now... we know we are in the final days of DDR4 and we are all gambling to see how low it will go before it goes much much higher with limited and eventually no new supply. Unfortunately there's no really great gaming/performance DDR4 left at this point (all the ultra low CL stuff is out of production, certainly no more Samsung B die being used for DDR4) I don't think we are in stock clearing phase just yet, but soon.
theres still supply of ddr3 on ebay...supply for ddr4 will not go away anytime soon
