Best "cheap" "non-gaming" computer, I have ever owned. I always felt it ironic that I have to recommend a mac to regular people in this price range... nothing in the market can match its price/performance ratio in this tiny form factor. My only gripe is this base model should have had at least 512 GB internal storage. But I guess third party SSD replacements offer 2 TB upgrades for $250 ish bucks. I have a USB4 enclosure with a 4 TB 990 Evo connected to it though. Extremely happy with this beautiful product.

Normal price but still great value. Still using my M1 mini (with 16GB) and I'm not sure I'll need to upgrade for the next decade. Solid machine.

5-7 years ago means your using an old school Intel processor. This will be much faster, if I had to guess.

You could give more money to Apple for upgraded storage, or better replace the SSD yourself after watching a YT video. It's rather simple to do.

Use the 256 as your OS/main apps drive and an external USB-C drive for data. You can get an external 1TB drive for $90-100 (though they're only like 1000MB/s speed).

You cannot build a computer this size with this power for $500 and vice versa. Only problem is shipping is going to take quite a while where I live
