There is an official fork of Asus-Merlin firmware that is being maintained and does support v2. It's called gnuton: https://github.com/gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng
As pointed out in previous thread and Amazon review, this is the v2 for which Asus-Merlin firmware does not support.

Best buy has it for $99.99, but is it v1 or v2 I do not know. Asus does not make it easy to find out.

Maybe I'll go to the store and see the box before I buy. Quad core 1.7Ghz on the box means v2, but absence of which could be either (sigh):

Why not just keep stock firmware? ASUS has evolved.

For me it boils down to firewall (and pihole). Isolated guest and iot networks won't cut it for some crucial on prem access from the local lan. I've found that manually creating rules and dhcp scopes, ranges etc has allowed me to get exactly what I want... not what some gui gods engineer for the average. That's why I go Merlin in addition to adding other functionality.

How is the range on this router? Is it stable? I'm 'in the market for a new router but have been looking at higher end ASUS models like 88U Pro, GT AX6000, etc.

I'm using an older mid range model of this router and I've had experience with a few other ASUS models like this. They are pretty stellar for range. But I highly recommend NOT using the smart connect feature. Setup dedicated 2.4ghz and 5ghz channels and it will be way better

Up to 3000 Mb/s !!! ???
Do people actually need that kind of speed??

*BTW: Does anyone know the diminishing returns for internet speed?
eg... standard web surfing and page loading time ....Would there be any difference between speeds 150 Mbps Vs 300 Mbps Vs 600 Mbps

It's not for internet speed. The biggest use case is connecting devices across the network while using the internet and working in mesh.

But you're right that this is likely more than some people would need.

Is this better than the router Comcast provides? Will I get better speeds and range? I believe I would need to buy a modem in addition to this in order to replace the isp device and save the $10 a month rental fee. Thank you for the help.

I see that the LAN ports only go up to 1000 mbps meaning you would only get 1gb of speed wired even if you have 2gb internet speed, right?
does anyone know of a router where I can get 2gb wired? I have 2gb fiber but I'm only able to get 1gb out of it.

Yes it's going to be better than Xfinity's gateway router in terms of both range and speeds.

However, I would stay away from this one and go with something else. It's become very temperamental for me over the last 6 months or so with dropped connection happening once a week for about two minutes. Once in a while power cycling is required to bring it back.

My last router before this was another ASUS model and had similar issues. I'm now suspecting there must be some long term damage from overheating or something that causes these to to become unstable.
