My question is the USB NAS for this router. I know they can never compare to a real NAS but for this router does the USB have Samba 2 or 3? Without rooting or doing anything unofficial? Would you recommend at $150? Also, does it also have samba 1 or is that removed if it has samba 2 or 3.. ?
Update: "the SMB server built into the router and discovered that it only uses smb version 1". It's disappointing that it uses smb 1.

NextDNS now have an script for Asus Merlin firmware which is also pretty good. It's like having a PiHole in the cloud.

Some of the AsusWRT/Merlin features were implemented into stock Asus firmware.
- CHANGED: Samba protocol support can now be set to
SMBv1, SMBv2, or SMBv1 + SMBv2 (the new default).
This will result in a performance drop on all
models but the RT-AC86U, but will be more secure.
Ideally, people should change it to SMBv2 only,
and then reboot all their client devices to start
using only the new protocol.

Except non supported / old models.
BTW the upgrade is as easy as download and manually update firmware.
Looks like this will be supported for a while based off of the # of downloads and last modified date:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/...lin/files/
#7 by most downloads/week
I have 3000 sqft 1-1/2 story household on .25 acre lot
If you can get a cheap ax router then get it; the WiFi 6e is overrated and can't expect everyone to upgrade all their clients to 6ghz
I was surprised it has so much lesser footprint than many other routers
Biggest problem is the antenna isn't detachable and the mobile app sometimes is inaccurate
