Bought this router used "good" on Amazon for 120, it works great in my 900sqft/floor century home, reaches both the Attic and the basement, and the back yard

I have Asus RT-N66R. I know its old but it is still serving its purpose. I understand that security and service is the reason to upgrade. As well as better wifi but my wifi is still rocking and zero issues. I just use it for basement and the living room above. I avoid other areas for good hygiene (ie no access to bedrooms).

My question is the USB NAS for this router. I know they can never compare to a real NAS but for this router does the USB have Samba 2 or 3? Without rooting or doing anything unofficial? Would you recommend at $150? Also, does it also have samba 1 or is that removed if it has samba 2 or 3.. ?

Update: "the SMB server built into the router and discovered that it only uses smb version 1". It's disappointing that it uses smb 1.

Good router, I just find myself having to do a factory reset after major firmware upgrades due to random issues. Restoring config usually brings back the issue, so I have to setup from scratch about every 6 months. I also use Merlin for the extra features.

NextDNS now have an script for Asus Merlin firmware which is also pretty good. It's like having a PiHole in the cloud.

I think it's SMB2. See https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/features

Some of the AsusWRT/Merlin features were implemented into stock Asus firmware.

From Asuswrt-Merlin Change Log 384.4 (16-Mar-2018)

- CHANGED: Samba protocol support can now be set to
SMBv1, SMBv2, or SMBv1 + SMBv2 (the new default).
This will result in a performance drop on all
models but the RT-AC86U, but will be more secure.
Ideally, people should change it to SMBv2 only,
and then reboot all their client devices to start
using only the new protocol.

Are u saying this option is available to select? Update required? Or is it any Asus router?

Upgrade Asus router to Merlin firmware - and - yes -option is available.
Except non supported / old models.
BTW the upgrade is as easy as download and manually update firmware.

Does AiMesh or mesh work well with Merlin?

Looks like this will be supported for a while based off of the # of downloads and last modified date:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/...lin/files/

Bought it used on Amazon it replaced my ac3100 in which the WiFi radio has issues ; solid upgrade I notice more range and it beat the rt ac5400 in performance
I have 3000 sqft 1-1/2 story household on .25 acre lot

If you can get a cheap ax router then get it; the WiFi 6e is overrated and can't expect everyone to upgrade all their clients to 6ghz

I was surprised it has so much lesser footprint than many other routers

Biggest problem is the antenna isn't detachable and the mobile app sometimes is inaccurate

I have Merlin on it and aimesh works well but if you don't have wired back haul then there's no point with dual band hardware
