For those who actually go out into the wilderness, you will NEVER rely on a cellphone. Phones break and die. You are using the phone for camera, comms, maps, etc. It will kill the battery in hours. You want a dedicated device like this. I personally use the SpotX and Garmin eTrex / GPSmap. Cell phone is just for camera.

Apple is using the globalstar sat network which is the same as spotx. Garmin uses the iridium sat network which is slightly better.

I pay for the annual subscription. SpotX allows you to have 14 predefined messages that do not count agaist you. You can use the cheapest plan with that. Just saying this because, I use garmin everything, but the inreach is not one of them. I find the spotx to better and I can use it WITHOUT a cellphone and get full functionality.

Garmin bought up the rescue service under spotx, raised prices, and more. Their plans were always more than spotx. I have been using these since 2018. I pay for the service, rescue plan and replacement plan. I lost my spotx and just got a new one sent to me. Again, I use Garmin Pilot, numerous fish finders and livescopes, mapping devices, etc.

Good luck out there.
Garmin recently changed their subscription plans to make it a LOT more expensive for people who only use this occasionally. I'd properly review these before you purchase so you know what you're committing to, otherwise this will end up being an expensive paperweight.
Subscription required. Per an Amazon review, $178 annually.

I think very few people are in your shoes. Most people I know use their devices for major trips, maybe a couple months at a time and deactivate. The math is much worse for casual users.

They didn't add a monthly "suspend" option to make less money. They want to make it a pain to reactivate, so they can earn money doing nothing most of the year.
You're correct that my usage is probably in the minority, and very correct that Garmin probably determined that the new plan scheme will make them more money in the long run. If I didn't already have a working InReach mini bought and paid for, I'd be shopping around and doing the math on the competition.

But let's do the math on the casual users that you mentioned. Currently for 2 months they'll pay $15+tax / month and $35/year. Total is $65+tax. For me and also the casual users to stay with Garmin on the "enabled plan" would cost $96 / year. So there's an increase for the casual user of roughly $31 per year.

Since I was responding to chocomog08's statement "I'd rather risk death than pay the new subscription.", my question would be: is $31 worth risking death for?

It would definitely be reasonable to shop around for a different device or plan and I hope that's what he's doing and if the money was a huge issue that's what I would do.

But to have no plan, no device and no option other than risking death when it's only a matter of $31 strikes me as being either foolish at the least or even insane at the most.

Under the new plan, if I remain on the cheapest "enabled plan" for $8 per month all year with no yearly fee, the total is $96+tax.

I don't see the $8/mo option on their website...

Since I think people have covered the subscription side of things decently well. I'll just add that while new phones can provide some of these messaging features, if you want to be regularly or actively updating your location for others it's a lot easier using one of these. With the phones you have to hold still and point and such. With my Garmin Messenger I hit a button on my phone and it works the message out as I continue hiking or whatever. It also generally seems to do a better job of it.
That being said, while I like the hardware I think the support side of things kind of sucks. I had to try three times with different emails to get mine to activate with their website, the subscription pricing seems predatory, their website bugs out and will conveniently have issues with you changing plans if you do it the day before, and unlike every other company they did not warn me that the card on file was a card that was expiring. I thought that was fine when the site glitched up since I was suspending service in the off season but then got reading that they will still bill you and just send it to collections.
So again, actual use of the device and the device itself has been super convenient, battery is great, sends messages reliably, etc. but the customer service side of things seems dated and bad.

You can go month to month. I only have it when I know I'll be in remote areas.

I think what people are saying is that there are a burgeoning variety of options for emergency backup systems, and Garmin's is rapidly tumbling down the ranks in terms of cost effectiveness and device usefulness. (With a realistic modicum of common sense—don't go hiking in flip-flops—life-threateningly bad outcome scenarios also have a fairly low probability, and the first part of "if it happens you'd pay anything" is "IF it happens".) A spare iPhone 14/15/16 turned off and packed in a small Pelican can serve as a backup distress system, map, camera, flashlight, etc., any smartphone may soon do the same with Starlink DTC, and the really hardcore will never substitute anything for a PLB, so inReach is facing an increasingly tough sell.

It's the same price at Sports Basement and if you're a Basementeer member, it's an extra 10% off, so about $270 +tax.

I have used inreaches for the past few years when hiking in the backcountry. I always activate it before a trip, test it, use it on the trip, then suspend the account until the next trip. It is not that expensive. My son's scout troop uses them regularly and we did have one rescue a kid that had a serious alergic reaction while nowhere near cell service.
Yeah there are now satellite enabled cellphones but those use different satellites that do not reach pole to pole like the ones used by inreach. Most of Canada is not covered. Also inreach satellites have a higher orbit so they tend to be higher overhead and less likely to be blocked by mountains. Inreach also has a dedicated emergency response system that will most likely respond quicker than you texting a friend or 911. Finally, their plans include insurace for the device owner. So if you have to take a $20k helicopter ride, you dont pay. Good luck if you rely on a cellphone.
I am all for finding a deal, but I would rather not skimp out when it comes to potential life and death situations.

just clarifying - I know some higher smartphones have satellite communication - are you saying that single or stand alone devices will be obsolete as they become common in smartphones?

I could see how this could be beneficial if you are out of range for cell connectivity.
GARMIN is more reliable. Inreach uses iridium network.

How does the inReach compare with Zoleo satellite communicator? Zoleo requires an app on your phone, so you have to keep both charged. Wondering if the Garmin is a quicker response time vs the Zoleo. Anybody here have experiences to share? Thanks

Depends completely on your expectation for your usage. If you just need to send a SOS emergency alert, the inReach needs no app or phone. It just needs an active satellite service subscription. There are many reviews with comparisons of the two on the web and youtube.
