For those not aware, you'll need to purchase a subscription for most of the truly useful functions to work. I bought one last year for my week climbing in RMNP. I returned it because the battery life wasn't quite what I hoped it to be with the TracBack feature on.
actually likely this is because tmobile is launching Lte over star link texting.
Normal price is $399 but multiple stores have had it discounted lately.

Mostly improved battery life and USB-C charging rather than micro-usb.

You can see the detailed comparison between the two models on Garmin's site - https://support.garmin.com/en-US/...hypusS3OQ9

Besides the claimed improvements in battery life and USB-C interface, the mini2 pairs to the Garmin Explore app (instead of the older Earthmate app) which is marginally more featureful. The mini2 also can use Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS which ought to improve location accuracy and availability (not obvious from my experience that it does). I did the upgrade a while ago and was available to sell off my mini for $200 then - so, the upgrade only cost $200. I tell my self that the "improvements" were worth it Wink

The true cost of this device is in the monthly subscription plan and the device cost will be marginal over the 4-6 years that you will use it.

In a few years this will be one of those devices we laugh at when we think people paid this kind of money for this device. Any flagship phone will have satellite capabilities as a standard feature with carrier backing within a few years. T-Mobile will lead the way from what I've read and it's being tested now and already available on some phones.

Very interesting perspective .. and likely to become true by 2025 with T-Mobile/Starlink. The Starlink doc (https://api.starlink.com/public-f...PDATE.pdf0 implies that unmodified LTE phones will work just fine, as long as the operator provides access to the right LTE bands. My 2 year old Pixel 6 already does most of those bands.

"Since our vision is to connect everyone using their existing phones without needing a new phone, upgrades, or a special app, we decided to use standard LTE/4G protocols."

"The operators provide critical LTE spectrum in the 1.6- 2.7 GHz range that we use to transmit our satellite signals"
