Ordered an i9 open box 'Excellent' for $765, but potentially canceling it:
Battery life is not good according to a ton of the reviewers - Guess not surprising considering it is an i9 with an OLED screen...
I do not game and anyway I have a 13th Gen i7 desktop with a 3070Ti, so the Asus' 3050 GPU would be a slight step down from the 3050Ti in my 2 1/2 year old Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 4 which has a 3050Ti. But the CPU would be a nice step up from the i7 -11850H. And the OLED screen would also be nice.
That said, to bother upgrading from the X1E Gen 4 at THIS time (it meets all my current needs), I was looking for a QHD 16" again ideally and very good battery life... Otherwise I can wait...
At this $765 price though, I can recoup much / most of the cost by selling the X1E. IF I keep the Creator.
If may try to Creator (if my order goes through) and if battery life sucks, I may wait for a deal on a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 based 16" QHD laptop.
That said, the battery life on the Ryzen 9 7840HS + 7700S I tried in a store (Asus Tuf A16 2023), despite great review for battery life for the Ryzen 9 7840HS CPU + 7600S GPU variant, was low (3 hours total with no apps running - just an open Edge window!), but they had locked down the brightness and could not find settings on the spot (had limited time with). There was only 1 review for the Ryzen 9. The Ryzen 7 also had great reviews for battery life.
(Edited to fix various typos).
Battery probably won't last -- have to see how bad it is, but for $636 (after using some rewards points), I had to try it out. I'm not a big ASUS fan, so we'll see if it's a keeper or not.

I do like that this has an Ethernet port built in (no more needing a USB Ethernet that somehow always manages to not be in my bag). The specs say the SSD is PCIe 3.0 -- I hope that's wrong, but not a game-changer.
You should try the one you bought, and take it back if you're not happy. I'm a Total member so I have like 60-days for return plus I chose 12 month no interest, so I can use it for a while and easily sell it off later and maybe make some extra $$$.

Thanks! I got the standard membership to get a deal last year on a few 18TB drives.
Agreed.
Aside from not having a 16" 16:10 QHD screen (will see if I can live with that - My X1E is 16" 16:10 which is perfect for me), the 3 main downsides are as follows IMO (I personally can live with 2 and 3):
1) 2 hour battery life. This might end up being a deal breaker for me.
2) (not a real issue for me since I do NOT game on my PCs) - The RTX3050 GPU is at the very low end of the prior gen Nvidia RTX series. As noted, I do NOT game (will check the CUDA scores for the 3050 specifically, but I have a 3070TI on my desktop anyway if needed for backing up my UHD videos).
3) One SODIMM is soldered (saw this after ordering, but did not want to miss it. So to upgrade, you can either go with 8 + 16GB or 8 + 32GB.
I would get 32GB for a total of 40GB, if it supports it (will check in a minute).
With either of these 2 unbalanced configs, you will get partial dual channel mode:
I read that both AMD and Intel have (quote) "a "flex" RAM mode for mismatched DIMM sizes". So, if going with 8GB soldered + a 32GB stick, one would get dual channel performance for only the first 8GB of the 32GB stick (together with the 8GB soldered DIMM) - i.e. dual channel on the first 16GB, and then single channel performance on the remaining 24GB (of the 32GB stick).
Yes, my X1E battery life is a mixed bag, but definitely notably better than this Creator Q540VJ it seems - one person had brightness at 50% on the Creator Q and was getting only 2 hours as follows (and there are many similar complaints, so it is not isolated case):
QUOTE: "As an example: I am currently doing nothing but writing this review, with a single browser tab open, no background programs, and power set to Battery-Efficiency with 50% screen brightness. I am at 80% battery life with 2 hours left."

1.For Open Box Asus denied the 2 year warranty said it was registered previously with another owner so it is considered used.
2. The screen is AMOLED and the colors are over blown, orange looks like red, yellow looks like orange. Even changing the color profile does not help.
3. Battery life is just average, 3-4 hours on a full charge under normal load like brower tabs and some exel open.
Other than that mostly good but the screen color and the battery life was dissapointing. With the weaker 3050 I think it is not at all a slick at this price.

I feel that trying things myself instead of depending on what others say is the best way for me to decide whether this is a keeper or not. Now, just waiting for the "your order is ready for pickup" email.

I agree. I like to try myself.
Someone else said they got 3 - 4 hours only. A lot better than 2 hours at least. But hopefully there is still a little room for improvement.
I would be happy (pipe dream, I know, for this specific laptop) with 5 - 6 hours or so (for just browsing or video viewing) at 50% brightness or less and with battery saver on.
I recall that I disabled the NVidia 3050Ti on my X1E Gen 4 (a while back) as a test and it did not seem to help with battery life which surprised me. But it has been a couple of years so I do not recall all the specifics.
IF I get and keep the Creator, I may consider one of those powerful external battery packs.
EDIT - Hectic day, so I did not notice it until now, but there is a separate deal thread for this i9 variant. Oh well.
