I use this to drive my sennheiser HD 800s. Bass boost feature is awesome for reference headphones like HD 800s because it can sound flat. With little bit of eq, it sounds phenomenal. More than enough power to drive the power-hungry HD 800s. I have not used the high end tube amps costing >$1000 with my cans (I am sure they will sound fine). But for $300, I think this is one of the best contender in the market
These definitely are not meant to drive something as difficult as the HD800. I personally have the ifi idsd black label, but Id be surprised if the power levels are that much better on the finale. IME, theres a substantial difference driving even my relatively easy to drive Audio Technica W3000ANV with the ifi vs a ha5000anv. The highs are definitely not very resolving resulting in piercing highs with the ifi. I'm surprised you're not experiencing that with something as treble heavy as a Hd800. I also had an HD800 but I had to have one of the >$1000 tube amps to listen to it and tame the treble, a Zana deux se. Ultimately, I sold the entire Hd800 and Zana setup once I heard some high end IEMs like the Monarch and Unique Melody Mest MK2. As a plus, the ifi powers the IEMs very well. I found little to no advantage using a desktop app to power IEMs over a portable amp.

I wish this had Bluetooth (Edit for clarity: For connecting the AMP to the phone) - I have an older variant and the cables get a bit cumbersome for in-transit use.

Adorama cut my credit limit from 1250 to 400. Was never late, was paying off that Rat Rod guitar from last summer, have a new better paying job. They clearly want to move this off warehouse shelves, desperately, why lose a customer like this?

All credit card companies are closing accounts. Interest rates rose. Credit is being closed or defaulted on especially during the upcoming recession. They are all trying to get ahead of it. Adorama is not doing that. It's the bank responsible for that credit.

Sorry for the dumb question but why would one need a headphone amp?

I have HD800s and not HD800. If I am not mistaken, the treble on the HD800S is extended but quite linear, with no major spikes compared to HD800. I am using a tweaked EQ setting of oratory1990 on my APO equalizer and mostly listening on Tidal. Once EQ is set up and bass boost setting is turned on, its quite an awesome set up for $1500 with amp and headphones combined. They are not great for bass heavy music (I use Amiron Home instead), but for the rest of the genre, I think it gets a job done. I am sure there is a lot better set up with more money but I think the hunt never ends and return per price ratio gets small once the spending goes >2k range.

I got this yesterday. Sounds good. I like the thx aaa better as a portable amp. Has a much better eq option and loads of power. This is a more flat amp. Worth the money. But for me this is my favorite so far : https://headfonics.com/monoprice-...ac-review/

Also it's a pain to plug a phone in. Usb c input would be great.

I currently use a Fiio btr7 to power my hd660s2's. How much of a difference would I notice using an amp dac like this one?

You answered my question before I could ask it. I think the THX AAA amp has held up really well sound wise. It's still hard to beat for the price after all these years

Sorry I should have phrased my question better. All things equal (not counting bells and whistles, or portability), at the core service of plain sound amplification, would this sound any better than the Magni? As cheap as the Magni is, I think it's pretty well received as excellent sounding.
As far as sound amplification, this unit has a higher wattage, A balanced headphone output, and the battery does possibly/supposedly allow little greater voltage stability. the Bells and whistles do count though... Sound processing on these is very nice, and hardware based. But also if you already have a magni and you're happy with it and the output device that it's amplifying, and it goes well with your headphones You're using, you probably wouldn't see a tremendous benefit from this.At least not anymore than you could do with a software-based equalizer.

EDIT: I picked one of these up for my son's desktop setup.... and despite having the new potentiometer the early gain (6 o'clock to maybe 8:30 on the dial) still has the telltale channel imbalance that this series is known for. With the various power modes it's kind of a non issue, but it may be a barrier to interest, for some.

Not a true balanced out for those that care. For that you have to move up to the Diablo. It's providing the exact same wattage output on both the single ended and pentacon port.

With that said...

This is an insane price. idsd micro signatures go for more than this used, so if you're even remotely interested you should jump while you can, because you can easily make your purchase price back later, and maybe a tidy profit.

Also, it's just a very nice dac amp. Very powerful, very flexible. Jack of all trades, master of many. You could easily replace a desktop setup with it, imo (I wouldn't but you could lol)
