If I pour 195 degree coffee into my $20 tumblr, it will stay 195 degrees for at least an hour. It's not drinkable. Yes, it can hold it "hot" for a long time but the experience is different.
If I pour 195 degree coffee into the ember, it will wait till it lowers to the set temp, then the heating element will turn on to keep it there.
If this sounds enticing to you, this is a great deal. If it still doesn't make sense, move on. No need to further comment on why you think it's stupid. To each their own.

They instantly cool the coffee (or whatever) slightly and then hold that temperature. It's not quite the same thing since you have less control, but they should give you fewer issues. If you just want to keep something as hot as possible, the basic Zojirushi mug is still amazing for that.
EDIT: Was able to use my RedCard $50 off $50 with this. RedCard + 15% off + $50 off = $70 for pickup.
Also the heated bidet. But that's for another chain 😀

I do like the concept and enjoy the function of their product. But to me, the quality of their products is questionable and they do not stand behind their products.
However, I imagine this Ember cup is actually useful to someone who buys a Grande Starbucks coffee every day and takes a long time to drink it. It will stay the perfect temperature, and holds the 16 oz of the Grande coffee.
Next problem was the travel lid. It. Gets. Grody. and breaks often (customer service was great though, they replaced it many times even after warranty). The tumbler does have a newer design so that might be alright and all... but it's slider and I can see gunk filling up the area the slider slides on.
The last problem is, mine died after 3 years, as in won't do anything but flash errors now. Would I get another? I haven't and won't. The battery is not user accessible, so this thing is essentially a li-on battery encapsulated in something that can't be recycled. Big waste in my opinion.
