Have you played Elden Ring? If so, is this harder?

I'd suggest you take the $30 and consider upgrading your ps+ account to "Extra" tier while it's on sale during days of play sale ($74.99/12mo). It includes 'Demon Souls' as well as access to 400+ other games. That's what I did.

Yes and no. ER has more challenging bosses, but since it's open world, you can cheese harder bosses a bit since there's more room to level up, summons, weapon arts, etc.

DS is tougher simply because exploration options are minimal as there's definitely easier progression paths, less save opportunities and the game punishes you with dying by also stealing half your health. The remake is quite a bit harder than the OG.

It's a lot closer to Dark Souls, if you know that gameplay. Similar but different than Elden Ring.

Imo you could call it "harder" because; there are no mounts, no ashes, jumping is limited (tiny jump only at the end of a brief run, like most souls games), and maybe a couple little things. But if you're familiar with losing souls (runes) and having to go back to pick them up, then it will be pretty familiar.

Great game. I platinum'd it back when it came out. Really challenging game but once you learn the mechanics and get good gear, it becomes manageable. Also the graphics are some of the best I've seen on PS5.

This is quite a bit harder. Elden Ring is the easiest of all of FromSoftware's Souls-like games. Elden Ring was the only one of their games I bothered to get 100% of the trophies on, simply because it just wasn't very hard.

Said it before and I'll say it again, this remake is good. However it is the first game in the "souls" series and boy does it show. Some of the ideas aren't implemented too well and don't return in future souls games. Also as far as difficulty is concerned, demon's souls in my opinion is way easier than Elden ring. Elden ring is only easier if you choose to use ashes.

Just FYI, included in PS Plus Extra tier catalog.

This is about as cheap as it goes for physical or digital.

It is the sole reason I got a PS5 at launch.

If you have never played a Soulsborne game, this game can feel overwhelming and it is unique. There are many areas that are just fantastic and I highly recommend playing the game blind without looking online. With that said, if you get stuck, there is so much online to get through any tough parts that the game can seem very easy if you go that route.
  • You lose half your health when you die after you resurrect, but can get some back with a ring gotten early
  • Health 'flasks' don't exist and you have herbs that are of limited supply (find/purchase)
  • No jumping
  • Mages are OP like most Soulsborne in PVE
  • The first level you have to play through if you are comparing to Elden Ring is similar to Stormveil Castle so if you like that sort of area, you will like this
  • IMO, there is no area in any Soulsborne game in level design, setting or mood than that of Tower of Latria

Someone asked about Elden Ring comparison and the biggest difference to me is that areas of the game are linear and you cannot go off course and explore. It's point A to point B with shortcuts unlocked as you go. It can get frustrating because progression is blocked as you go and have to overcome some obstacle. In some areas it can feel overwhelming the first time. Get past a Red Dragon on a bridge, getting past some crossbow guys, 2 Blue Eyed Kights, and then a boss before you can save your progress (archstone/site of grace/bonfire). And the graphics are arguably better than Elden Ring.

Open world messes me up bc I'm always going on the wrong direction. Do you have a link to the optimal "path" to take for Elden ring? Demons souls is my favorite game in the series and I think it was way easier than ER

I gave up on getting platinum since I didn't know it would start new game plus right away…. the new game plus kicked my butt. I will need a 3rd play through.

Mount is pretty much irrelevant since there aren't many open areas in Demon's souls. No ashes which yes, when used, makes Elden ring easier. Especially the Mimic one last I checked. Jumping really isn't too much of a thing in Demon's souls unless you're trying to get secrets. Frankly, Elden ring overuses the jumping mechanics and it still isn't very good in that game.

With all that said, Demon soul's combat is way more basic and slower. Elden ring's first story boss alone is mechanically more difficult than any boss in Demon's souls. Some bosses feel like they're ripped out of fighting games. While limited herbs are annoying, there are places you can farm them to help make the game way more manageable.
