DS is tougher simply because exploration options are minimal as there's definitely easier progression paths, less save opportunities and the game punishes you with dying by also stealing half your health. The remake is quite a bit harder than the OG.

Imo you could call it "harder" because; there are no mounts, no ashes, jumping is limited (tiny jump only at the end of a brief run, like most souls games), and maybe a couple little things. But if you're familiar with losing souls (runes) and having to go back to pick them up, then it will be pretty familiar.

This is about as cheap as it goes for physical or digital.
It is the sole reason I got a PS5 at launch.
If you have never played a Soulsborne game, this game can feel overwhelming and it is unique. There are many areas that are just fantastic and I highly recommend playing the game blind without looking online. With that said, if you get stuck, there is so much online to get through any tough parts that the game can seem very easy if you go that route.
Someone asked about Elden Ring comparison and the biggest difference to me is that areas of the game are linear and you cannot go off course and explore. It's point A to point B with shortcuts unlocked as you go. It can get frustrating because progression is blocked as you go and have to overcome some obstacle. In some areas it can feel overwhelming the first time. Get past a Red Dragon on a bridge, getting past some crossbow guys, 2 Blue Eyed Kights, and then a boss before you can save your progress (archstone/site of grace/bonfire). And the graphics are arguably better than Elden Ring.

With all that said, Demon soul's combat is way more basic and slower. Elden ring's first story boss alone is mechanically more difficult than any boss in Demon's souls. Some bosses feel like they're ripped out of fighting games. While limited herbs are annoying, there are places you can farm them to help make the game way more manageable.
