I bought this a few months ago at Micro Center for $130. I suppose the chip shortage maybe keeping prices up. The router has been solid, I use it as the root node of an AiMesh setup with 3 rt-ac68u nodes. No complaints.

you've been happy with aimesh? I have had one root and 3 68u nodes and it never worked as I would expect with hand-off, etc.

I have an AX-RT86U with an RT-AC68U and RT-AC86U as nodes and I have the same issues with handoff. Otherwise pretty solid, but if I'm moving around it's helpful to turn wifi off and then on to find a closer node.

yes this is exactly my point, i would think if they are going to promote aimesh they would do something about that. I always wondered if you got higher models like all 86U or all of these models if they would handoff better and the real issue is the 68U doesn't handoff right.

I can't say I've noticed any issues, or it could also be that I haven't been paying too much attention to it. I just don't experience any connection issues on the mobile devices (including IoT) and none of the users complain about connectivity.

2 of my nodes are hardwired while one (whose ethernet port is borked) is connected wirelessly on 5 Ghz.

I can't say I experience any handoff issues. I do keep the nodes current with firmware updates, but I do wait a while for feedback before I apply the firmware updates since there have been some updates that weren't very nice. The AX has a pending update that I've yet to apply.

Skip this model and buy the AX68U. You'll thank me later if you favor range and decent hardware for the cash.

AX3000 has a low end SoC tied to a decent 5G radio thats been nerfed down to 2x4 config on 5G. This same PCB or a variant of it is used for the AX82U in full 4x4 radio config for 5G. Also cost a ridiculous price that makes zero sense, other than having inflated marketing numbers.

The only benefit you get here on the AX3000 is that 160mhz bandwidth/DFS (inflating spec, surprise!), but it's completely pointless over 15 feet range... Also forces the radio into a lower spectrum which is mostly crowded these days, at least in NA. Higher spectrum/channels wont support it.

The 3x3 Radio in the 68U is newer and performs much better range wise. The main processor is also an A53 and not the crap A7 SoC they use for lower end products.

Some idiot is going to complain about the AX68U not having a "triple core" processor, but they're literally the same config. AX68U is 2 core main cpu (1.8ghz.. faster A53) + 2 Radio cores for 2.4 and 5G (1.5GHZ A7). AX3000/58U is a 3 + 1 design SoC + 5G radio (all 1.5 GHZ A7). 2.4G is on the main chip/soc, but BCM spec sheets make marketing write stupid shit.

This isn't a deal, it's ASUS and alt brands abusing customers cus marketing number goo brrr.

AX68U sounds like a perfect transition from AC68U, just one clarification, if lowest price was not the criteria and AX86U was available for 180 or so, would it make sense so get AX68U either way or for 20-30 more AX86U would be a better longer term buy. I think I know the answer by reading you posts and threads over at mbreview but a final word on this would help me decide right away. Thanks.

If your already at this price range just get the new GS version of the AX3000 for $20 more, from reviews even though its the same hardware it sounds like the firmware is a lot more stream lined and performs a lot better.

the model you mentioned (AX-68U) does not have the 160 mhz bandwith. I have the
RT-AX3000 and I love that I can use the 160 bandwith. since most of my neighbors dont have this bandwith channel I get less distortion on this channel

Tons of users? Grab something like an AX11000 spec tri brand to split radio load.

Not a lot of users? AX86U or AX88U. These two trade off depending on needs. The AX86U supports 2.5G throughput, but has a weaker 2.4G 3x3 radio identical to the AX68U. Main Processor spec and 5G radio are identical.

Alt high end> AX89X which is a teamed 4x4 + 4x4 qualcomm radios (8x8 config) in 80mhz, but it's been buggy in the past.

As you can see I'm biased to ASUS but will call bullshit on products with low cost hardware. AX68U is more of a value solution while not falling into entry segment hardware which is shared with sub 100 USD products.

AX86U is the better product, if you can get it for $180~, then its a no brainer.

Same 2.4G radio > 4 core variant of the same A53 > stronger 4x4 radio for 5G.

160mhz uses the lower 36-48 block (80mhz) 5G channel (which is super saturated for legacy hardware) plus a low gain 52-64 DFS block combined. Your neighbors are likely causing interference regardless of what you believe.

The DFS channel have lower power output by regulation and it makes little sense if you actually use wifi like a normal person. QAM rates typically dip into 80mhz territory over 10-15 feet. Go test it yourself if you don't believe me.

Your AX3000 also transfers at 2x4 config and is worse than a proper 4x4 160mhz solution, though I wouldn't recommend it regardless.

Without that premium/nerfed 5G radio, the AX3000 is an entry product competing with cheap 50-80 USD TPlink and Netgear solutions. They all use the same BCM67xx series SoC's...

The AX68U is a better WIFI router in general and has more of a fair BoM cost. 160mhz doesn't make sense on 5G unless they open up spectrum and push radio gain.

Edit:

The super high end teamed 4x4 + 4x4 (8x8) qualcomm solutions don't even support 160mhz as it requires disabling one of the radios and IMO defeats the purpose of what a high end router should be.

The AX6000 spec on something like an AX89X comes from 8x8 4800mhz 80mhz config, or 4x4 4800 160mhz config (one radio disabled) + 4x4 1200mhz 2.4G.

80mhz on 5G is just better and has way more options. Marketing is misleading Smilie

The lesser routers will be your bottle neck cause the newer ones will have better 160mhz bandwidth so even without tri band its not trash 5ghz mesh

If your trying to mesh with 2.4ghz then use for ethernet for legacy then it will be a time saver but don't think it will give amazing speeds it's just for hard to wire areas

The settings are tricky to understand but smart connect is better left off

Are they wired nodes? Have you tried using them as access points on different channels? That's my setup and has been working great with handoffs for years. My main router is rt ac 86u.
