I feel like 8 XL is probably closer to those than this. This has more souls like mechanics / bosses where you gotta time your dodge / blocks perfectly

Also this has 1 single character with like 7/8? weapons, whereas DW8 is the one with playable characters of all of them from the kingdoms + campaigns

I haven't played this one, but I know that you can only play as one character, instead of the 40+ you could choose from in the other games. So, if that doesn't sound ok to you, you may want to skip this one.

The best Dynasty Warriors top 3:
1. Origin (Which is so good that saved Koei Tecmo because they did so bad at Dynasty Warriors 9, and Origin is getting a "large-scale" DLC because of its positive reviews celebrating 25th anniversary)
2. Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition (End of old series, tons of warriors, weapons, and good IF stories, etc.)
3. Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends (Classic of the classic, and also the most wanted one from the mystery remaster of a "classic series title" announced at 25th anniversary)

I thought the idea of dw9 was intriguing until I played it and it was one of the worst games I ever played. This one is similar to dw9 but they fixed a lot of the worst aspects of it and has been fairly enjoyable so far. Not sure about longevity since you get one character as mentioned previously.

That's my era too. Origins is the best narrative presentation to date. All 3 sides participate throughout as opposed to the kind of cookie cutter modular way it was with having to replay battles. The separate main character story is a little lame but like 10% of the whole thing. Leveling system is better than previous titles too, don't have to grind larger battles. And the scale awesome for bigger battles. It will scratch the itch I promise.
