These are awesome for making quick refrigerator pickles. No canning or sterilization needed. You just boil the pickling mix and poor into the mason jars loaded with sliced pickles and place in the fridge. You can eat them the next day!

The Mainstays are $12.33, are these really so much better that a $1.67 more than mainstays is a front page deal?

From my understanding Mainstay uses different sized mouths so the standard balls lids wont work with them.
Than add in the fact that alot of people complain about the mainstay lids..

Personally this is one of those cases where i think the big name (Ball)is a big name for a reason. (Better Quality)

I bought these in March of this year:

Mainstays 32 oz Airtight Glass Regular Mouth Canning Jars
+
Mainstays Pack of 8 BPA-Free Plastic Regular Mouth Canning Jar Lids

So far, they have worked well. I do not use them for canning but for storing things in the freezer & maybe very rarely put one in the microwave for a minute. I have only one jar that has an issue. It has a small internal crack near the mouth I just noticed recently, but you can't feel it on the inside or outside of the jar. The 8 jars/lids have been in constant rotation - freezer/refrigerator/dishwasher.

Both brands are same size wide mouth. The cheaper mainstays don't say bpa free like the Balls though and the rings are gold instead of silver like the Balls.

Probably has some sort of plastic coating they say is bpa free. I don't can, so I don't use those lids. If you are not canning you could always cut a small piece of organic cotton to slide under the lid and then screw on.
