Those are refurbs, and this is brand new; that's the only difference. The sellers are different too, but they're both official stores.

Wish this has USB-C so I don't have to use the power adapter.

it appears that ebay regularly have the laptop version of this nuc on sale for around 160 (199 normal price). for example:
https://dealquestnow.online/f/18568201-acemagic-ax15-laptop-15-6-fhd-ips-n150-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-win-11-pro-159-99
as far as i can tell they have the exact same hardware (n150, 16g memory). the complains people have about that laptop was mostly about it not being a good enough laptop. if i'm planning to run it as a proxmox box with lid close most of the time, the extra 30 buck would be well worth it for the 15 inch screen, built-in keyboard, and battery backup. no?

am i missing something? thoughts?

Interesting. Hadn't seen those. I would only add that the laptops are refurbished, but the warranty might negate any of those future issues.

And usb-c.
Obviously the screen on it is probably horrible, but if that deal came back I'd buy it for all of the above reasons, and can always use hdmi if I need the color

Good thoughts. I purchased this unit in a previous deal but if I'd known about those laptop's I'da probably gone that way myself. Ended up upgrading to a more powerful mini pc to run a local llm.

Also the laptop has usb-c which this one does not but you lose the displayport.

Yes, you are missing some things. Firstly, a laptop and a mini-PC are two different things and niches; someone looking for one would not normally be interested in the other. Second, again, that laptop is refurbished, while this here is brand new. This mini-PC also has better ports and is easier to carry around than a 15" laptop.

One of the images in reviews has a sticker that says 12V & 2.5A. Most 60W+ PD supplies will be capable of 12V & 3A. 12V was never required as part of the official spec, and laptop manufacturers tend to not include it in their PD supplies, but most 3rd party PD supplies do support 12V. I can't find any information on which barrel connector it uses. If you buy one and measure it then you can get a pre-made PD trigger with barrel connector.example 5.5x2.1 barrel: https://a.co/d/itagpvf

Is anyone else too traumatized by Windows Vista to consider buying a computer named Vista?

This was never worth $230.

I ordered the GMKtec NucBox G3 Plus direct from GMKtech in China for $159.11 shipped including $3 shipping insurance.

Same specs except 2.5 Gbps LAN and an extra SATA m.2 slot.

Maybe I can't read but didn't see the NIC speed on this.

well, yeah, they are different things.

anyone looking for a laptop would obviously not buy a NUC. but the reverse is not necessarily true. that's what makes this an interesting choice.

for most people looking for a NUC as a small home sever or even desktop, i'm struggling to find a reason to NOT pay $30 more and get the monitor, keyboard, built-in battery backup, usb-c power input and supply...

as far as ports, the laptop has has 2x usb3, 1xusb2, 1xusbc, 1 hdmi. NUC has 2xusb3, 2xusb2, 1xdp and 1xhdmi. so laptop actually has better ports. (the dp port is replaced by the display)

laptop is physically bigger, but if people are planning to travel with it, wouldn't they most likely need to bring along a display and keyboard anyway?

laptop was refurb with 2 years of warranty (from seller?), new NUC from amazon may or may not come with one year warranty. both warranty have very little value in my book.

it just feels like the laptop form would be better deal in every way but i can't shake the feeling that i'm missing something important...

Personally for me I don't need a screen, and having it in a slightly smaller form is a benefit. My plan is to set this up with home assistant, so an N150 is better than an N97 for the lower power usage.
