My friend has this and so far, it's been working good. Had some smoked tri-tip last week. Good smoke flavor. Some bad reviews pertain to bad shipping with dents on the sides, etc.

Is this or the Weber Smokey Mountain better for smoking?

The Masterbuilt allows for automation via digital and app control. Sort of a "set it, forget it" type. The Weber is basically all manual control.

You can get a fan controller for the smokey mountain that makes it nearly set and forget. You might be able to get a used WSM and a controller for this same price range.

I have the original model from 5 or 6 years ago. Its great. Real charcoal flavor but automation controlled by your phone. Although the original model had some design flaws, they're probably work our now.

Did some research on this autoignite line a while back and it doesn't look as good as the gravity line. Small charcoal box inside the grill - takes up grill space and requires more frequent refilling. I've been happy with my gravity series, and I'm imagining masterbuilt quality is good on this as well

always regretted not getting the gravity when they went on sale. I'm thinking this will be perfect to pair with my camp chef thats been sitting idle for a while so I can reverse sear or just sear some steaks on for charcoal flavor while the camp chef would be reserved for longer smokes.

i don't think using up grill space or refilling more would be an issue as I truly just want to grill with it rather than smoke.

hoping to see home Depot or Lowe's price match tho for local pickup and get military discount.

I bought one of these a few months ago. My main gripe is that there's no way to choke out the fire, so the fuel you put in is the fuel that will be burned up. Also, IDK if I'm just missing something, but this means that every time I add fuel (seems to be 4-5 hours or so), I still get like 10 minutes of the white "bad" smoke, which I think I'm supposed to take the food out for, since that smoke is pretty acrid. I think the gravity series might not have these problems, since it does have slides to choke out a fire, and you don't have to add fuel very often since it has a proper hopper.

I compared it to a $60 rusty camp chef pellet grill I got off of fb marketplace and I'm going to try returning this grill back to lowes.

If this had a side burner on it I would be saying I bought it instead of complaining that I didn't.

I have an old gravity one and I would hold out for clearances on the updated gravity line if you were tempted by this. My old gravity my biggest complaint is how hard it can be to ignite after a good rain and its insanely humid out. I'm in the market for bigger. The small one has served me well but the number of times I just needed more space has been more than expected. grilling corn + steaks? yeah need a lot of space.

I bought one of these things last time it was on sale and I love it. For the price, it's kind of the ultimate smoker IMO. It's just the right size to smoke enough food for my family (5 of us). I just run small wood splits in it, add one every 30 minutes or so and it handles it great. Excellent smoke flavor, leagues beyond what you can get out of a pellet smoker. I've had an offset, literally 5 different pellet smokers, and now this. This is the one I'm keeping. The offset had the best flavor, but too much labor involved in keeping it going. Pellet smokers are easy but are essentially glorified ovens and produce no smoke flavor. This MB is a good balance between the two extremes.

I bought this at the beginning the month.

Performance is good and you can get a lot of smoke flavor just throwing in a chunk of wood. I find my cooks to come out more consistent with this grill vs my pellet smoker which is a Green Mountain Daniel Boone. I haven't really used my pellet grill since getting this, but will use it for overflow or for the pizza attachment moving forward.

I love that after loading in the charcoal in and a starter that it only takes maybe 5-10 minutes to get up to temperature. I feel like it took 5 minutes just for my pellet grill to get to the starting 150 temperature, then another 5-15 minutes to get to set temperature depending how hot I set it. My pellet grill never gave the smokey flavors/tones to the food I cook in the way the 545 does. The sear plate is a neat idea and I've used it a few times to reverse-sear. I like that I can line most of the lower interior with foil to keep it clean.

I've had great luck with Jealous Devil Chunx charcoal and Diamond Strike-a-Fire starters (I'll break the strike-a-fire into 1/3's that fit the lighter tray and save 1/3rd for the next time, turns out to be plenty cost-effective. I used Western brand wood chunks so far if I want to give the food smokey flavor. Whatever you put in the hopper will most likely burn up completely, sometimes I have a few small pieces leftover but you'll only want to load in what you think you're going to use. For short cooks, I'll load 1/4 to 1/3 of the hopper, for long cooks I'll load the whole thing

The lowest set point appears to be 250 degrees. a full hopper yields 10-12 hours (maybe longer) in my experience so far when I did shredded beef via chuck roast. You can add more charcoal if you run out but I would recommend reloading it well before it gets low if you think you'll need it. The grill maintains temperature extremely well especially after the charcoal is mostly lit (at the beginning minutes it will fluctuate by +-5-10 degrees, then stabilizes to +-4 degrees off set point). When running above 500 degrees, it does get difficult to handle the food as the heat coming off of the grill is intense to the point where I should probably be wearing gloves.

The Tom Horsman reviews convinced me to pull the trigger on it and I can say that I'm happy with this grill. So far I've found the small ash tray to be somewhat of a non-issue but could potentially see where it could be with the extra long cooking sessions.

I was wondering if I could run this on a 300W portable battery pack, I finally found the power requirements for this which makes me think that I should be able to:
• 100-120VAC, 60HZ, 1.1A, 82W
