One of my favorite EV related YouTube channels "State of Charge", did a review of this charger and here's a link.

J1772 is practically dead with nearly all manufactures switching to NACS in the US.

Go for a NACS unit to future proof your charger, else you will be stuck with having to use an adapter forever!

For some people using an adapter maybe ok, but I love the fact that my NACS charger ( Tesla mobile charger) has a button which opens the charge port even if the vehicle is in sleep mode. No need to get the phone or open a door to wake up the vehicle. But if you are going to use an adapter, that may not be an option.

If you just use the Nema plug, the.mn it's 40amos but pretty sure it can be hardwired which would get you the 50 amps.

I think I might get this instead of the GrizzleE. I only really need the 24A setting to charge. I feel higher will just be overkill and overload my box anyway. I think a lot of people really don't need lvl 2 charging unless they need to charge and leave the same day but most people only really need to charge overnight.

This Technology Connection video does an excellent job at explaining it: https://youtu.be/W96a8svXo14?si=A6-ldNDiXPaN27qF

I have this charger and wouldn't recommend it. I messed up registering it with the app and they couldn't clear out the account on their side. So now I'm stuck with a dumb charger. Charger works great but with no smart features.

Yes. It is not a hard install to do yourself, if you know what you are doing, but if you are asking this question, it is probably in your best interest to get an electrician. This also has a hardwire option for the quickest charging. For that, you definitely need an electrician.

If it's on its own 20A circuit you can convert to 240 by changing breakers, setting this EVSE to 16A, and wiring it all up. You can replace the cord and outlet with NEMA 6-20 or wire it directly if there is enough slack in the wiring.

If you don't know for 100% certain you need 50 amps I wouldn't worry about it anyway. 40 will get you topped up overnight easily on most current EVs.

I have a NEMA 14-50 outlet in my garage. Is it a DIY job to install a car charger like this over the outlet? Or would I still need to hire an electrician?
If your garage outlet is wired with just a normal $10 NEMA 14-50 outlet, you really need to upgrade to an actual EV rated NEMA 14-50 outlet before using a NEMA plug in EV charger like this one.

There are just way too many horror stories of cheap NEMA 14-50 plugs burning up because the cheap ones were never designed for the type of Max amperage draw for such extended times as EVs require to recharge.

Here's a $50 one on Amazon, Some Home Depot's have them for $39 right now.

https://www.amazon.com/Leviton-Charging-Receptacle-Outlet-1450R/dp/B0CS8FFC1W/ref=sr_1_6?dib=eyJ2Ijo... [amazon.com]

Look for the stamped car on the NEMA outlet to know that they are designed for EV charging, supposedly these types of outlets are much more robustly built, in order to withstand the extended duty cycle and heat that EVs demand of this type of outlet. $50 is cheap insurance for your family and house.

It's also worth noting that properly torquing and re-torquing the wire attachment lugs on any EV charging NEMA 14-50 plug is essential. Underclamped or under torqued lugs are one of the main reasons the cheap plugs fail and overheat. The more expensive EV designed Hubbell and Leviton plugs have better internal construction, but mainly have much better wire clamping lugs, for a much better wire to lug connection. Ideally you just want to direct wire your EV charger, but if you want the flexibility of using a NEMA 14-50 plug you really need to make sure you're using a properly designed and properly installed EV 14-50 plug.

This seems to be the NEMA 14-50 version so charging is limited to 40A. Costco title 50A is misleading (not op fault). Also $350 seems to be Costco regular price no discount.
This EVSE comes in 3 variants, one with NEMA 14-50P pigtail (the one from Costco), one with NEMA 6-50 pigtail, and one with no pigtail (hardwire only).
The ones with an included plug pigtail can be hardwired too. So the listing is not wrong that it is 50amp capable. The 40amp limitation is if you choose to attach the NEMA 14-50P pigtail and plug it into a NEMA 14-50R receptacle.

32amp portable chargers can be had for as little as $100-150. sure this is a little faster, but I wouldn't say meaningfully so. both will adequately charge your car overnight. plus the portable one you can take with you if needed. don't know why anyone would spend more for this

So as an owner of this glorious evse i will provide some insight.

The app sucks, the wifi sucks, the blue tooth sucks. Just use it as a dumb charger.

The unit is highly configurable. You want current limit, pop her open and change the dip switches. You want to hard wire it, just yonk the 14-50 and run some 6 awg into the back of the unit. It uses clamp style wire connections, so just strip and plug and drop the lever.

It supports up to 50 amp, but best bet is 48 amp, there is a huge up charge to get that last 2 amps due to the wiring rule because you have to go to the next size breaker etc.

UL listing? Its hard to find something for $100-150 that is not direct from china via no name brand.

50 amps is gonna mean for most an electrician required service run from the electrical panel...maybe a town inspector code check as well. Make sure your panel has 2 adjacent slots available for use...as its 240V. I'd say this will cost at least another $300, if not more. It should be tho a quick job, unless wiring run issues.

The one from the car doesn't allow scheduled charging and the app is not ideal. 2021 Audi 🤷🏽 ♂️
