Mobile Beacon wedged their way into the Sprint/Clearwire merger and got a settlement to sell this to low income people and community organizations. You either have to be below the poverty line, or a library/school/etc.

Unfortunately it is abused regularly, and the "honor system" has kinda taken over.

Eventually the settlement with T-Mobile will end (they won't say when) and Mobile Beacon is probably hoping to become an MVNO like Tracfone was after that.

T-Mobile is required by the feds to offer a certain number of low-income units to meet 2.5 GHz spectrum licenses. They're already ramping up self-ship efforts to replace Mobile Beacon in anticipation of the agreement ending.

I would like to have a 5G (or even LTE) backup to my primary internet that is never used except during primary failure at somewhere around this price. Or maybe neighbor and I should get diff services and do some level of aggregation for redundancy.

MN is the same. Plans such as these, Internet Essential. LifeLine, et al. used to require proof of some sort, not that the burden of proof is high. Many systems have ditched the concept of proof so as to not be stigmatizing. Same reason EBT/SNAP/WIC are cards instead of tear off dollar value "stamps" now.

Now if a person wants free museum or outdoor recreation memberships, etc. Just say so and get a free pass.

I bought it, there were no requirements of proof of income or anything at all.

If you want another alternative for home internet backup, you can get the Tmo Home Internet Backup plan for <$20/mo ($10/mo for Tmo wireless customers).

You get 120gb of data to use over the month, which should cover you for a few days if your primary internet is down. It comes with a free Tmo modem that you likely need to return if you cancel.

My wife is 100% remote, so I don't mind dropping $120/yr to ensure she has internet and doesn't have to switch to hotspot. If your home router supports primary/backup WAN, it can be a seamless experience to the user (I used to use a Merlin flashed Asus router (from Tmo Big Grin) that had a primary/backup, but switched over to a Unifi device that switches over automagically).

Yes, I realize this deal is for unlimited 5G internet access, but, depending on your use case (and the uncertainty of how long it will work), the $175 buy-in would shy me away.

Problem is that I'm currently on T-Mo Home Internet! Not many options here though they're running Quantum fiber around now. Orange cables and flags all over town so we shall see! Maybe then the T-Mo backup will suffice. I'm also 100% WFH but could drop this SIM into a spare phone and hotspot it? Or better yet - take the day off and blame the boss for not covering my internet expenditures. Smilie

So... you still have to pay $175 even though you are low incomes?

Only if a person wants the hardware. Can toss SIM into a BYOD phone, tablet, hotspot, etc.

The switch to a credit card type system probably saves them TONS of money. No printing the "coupons", no mailing on them, just digitally adding money to a card.
