Looks like they plan to re-release it in theaters this Sept to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Afterwards will be available in 4K.

It's MA so safe to assume Apple will upgrade the HDX?

You have to purchase in iTunes to get the upgrade.
Existing iTunes purchases will likely get the 4K upgrade but occasionally/infrequently the studio will relist the movie on iTunes with the new listing being 4k and the old not getting the upgrade.

Man, you two nailed it! Thanks for the update on the 4K release and for the insight into how iTunes upgrades work. I suspect it will list for $5k within a year if not sooner in the 4K mode. I'm seeing that happen with several movies on Fandango at Home once they get a 4K upgrade.

Guess I'll contact support and see if they can reverse it

edit: that took way too long (40min) to get back $5
