Out of the millions of emulation handhelds, where does this rank? Is there a gold standard, if so which is it? Granted I know a lot of times it comes down to personal preference. I'm always considering a retro handheld emulator, but the options make my head spin. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If you're looking to get your feet wet in the world of handheld rom emulation without breaking the bank, the rg35xx h is a great starting place. It's not the most powerful but at this price point, you're getting a lot of features and capabilities for the money. I do recommend replacing the 64gb microsd and watching a few YouTube videos about it prior to delivery.

I highly recommend the Miyoo Mini Plus. It's cheap. The built quality is good. You can play anything up to PSX games. Setup takes about an hour to upload a good UI called OnionOS. After that, it's a dream.

Are you using the stock SD card or did you roll your own build on a brand name high quality card? The ones that they ship with aren't of the highest quality and it sounds like you may have a defective card. Maybe its something else but that would be my best guess.

mine just came in the mail and it just microstutters and audio lags all over the place but nobody anywhere seems to talk about it? its bad in both retroarch and the stock emulators. tried all kinds of settings. so like i grab a ring in a sonic genesis game and then hear the sound a few moments later. i mean come on. so im really scratching my head on this one. bc everyone else seems to like this handheld. my rg350 from years ago is great its just 320x240 and the dpad is in the wrong place. the 3d printed grips i have for the rg350 fit this one pretty much perfectly so that part was a success. just dont get why everyone is so happy with the lags?????? if there is a solution it's probably to install one of the 3rd party os'es, but which one? its not batocera bc ppl are complaining about lag on that one. maybe muOS? come on guys, i know you guys arent all putting up with this lag, tell us the secret.

Does anyone know if you can load Pokémon Red and Blue on these and can you transfer Pokémon with someone else with the same device?

if you want something cheap as possible that is still decent quality and good enough for up to ps1
horizontal - rg35xx h, rg40xx h (4" screen)
vertical - batlexp g350, rg35xx plus, rg40xx v (4" screen)
sp - rg35xx sp
Those would be my recommendations. people really like the miyoo mini/plus and trimui brick as well but i thought both were inferior to the anbernic and batlexp options above, mostly due to ergonics/comfort. My personal favorite is the rg40xx v, as i found the 4" screen to be better and prefer vertical orientation for playing in bed. If you want pocketability then the sp is probably best

I spent the extra $15 and got the TrimUI Smart Pro. The portmaster games are really good after you update to CrossMix-OS_v1.3.0. This one is pretty good if you like the smaller screen and 4:3 resolution.

This can also play everything up to PSX with ease, can install MuOS and get tons of new functionality as well

It can be done with some setup, yes.Not exactly "simple" but I would not consider it too difficult either https://youtu.be/KCmlRqm4PBw?si=9-nZwVxIwlUx5lFp

I got my son an R36S which is similar but gameboy horizontal style, same screen, similar controls, around $40 also. It came with thousands of preloaded games from NES, Sega, GB, SNES, etc. A few newer ones from PS1 and N64. Not the most powerful out there, but totally worth it and a lot of fun. He loves it, and now I have been grabbing it myself to play everything from Tetris and Mario Bros. to TMNT, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot...its hard to beat this amount of fun for $40 these days.
