This is a very good story about two good friends who ultimately ended up having a disagreement.

This has 25 total episodes I think the series was ongoing until the authors death, so it's this just like the first arc or an abridged version or something ? I've always wanted to get into berserk (I have the first volume of the manga but haven't read it yet) and I've always heard good things about it

It's mainly the "Golden Age" Arc. The first ep is a flash forward where it explain almost nothing except Guts is a bad ass. Then it flashes back to Guts semi origin and then into meet Griffith and all THAT. It's an amazing show that sadly will have no end.
They even tried to reboot it with 3 movies covering this part and then 2 more seasons that go past the "Golden Age) arc. It still got cancelled AND looked like dog shit. I was able to get through the newer movies/series cause I love the story but it probably has only aged like milk.

The movies looked OK but the 2016 CGI series was terrible

Berserk Redux is probably the best answer to this question. It's a fan edit that combines all the movie and anime content together and surprisingly has not been taken down despite being publicly hosted on Vimeo in high quality.

Agreed. That whole late 90s era was amazing. Berserk was the all time best, but Vampire Hunter D, Record of Lodoss, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the shell… man, couple that with SNES and PS1 Squaresoft RPGs. What a great time to grow up.
