These movies are pretty unique. I don't think anything like them will ever again be made, certainly not of the quality that Linklater has achieved here. But just the way these films were made, with the amount of creation by Delpy and Hawke; the longitudinal involvement of both actors give these characters unique depth and breadth… special.
Each movie explores a different phase of what starts as a chance encounter that turns into a romance and relationship. Real-time years pass between the events in each film, and the actors re-inhabit their characters as they themselves age (as in Linklater's excellent single-movie project Boyhood).
The creative process for these films is truly unique and worth reading about if you enjoy and appreciate the art of filmmaking, even if you don't decide to watch the films. But they are worth a viewing, especially for anyone who appreciates an honest look at a relationship, watching the flame ignite and then rekindle and then flicker and fade.
Be warned that this is essentially three movies involving two actors talking to each other the entire time - essentially a two-person play in three acts. That may fascinate you or dissuade you, but it's a remarkable feat by those involved.
I met a woman many years ago on a plane. It was almost like the first movie. Suffice to say, I blew it. There were no sequels. I will live in eternal regret because I didn't get her number since it felt like cheating despite the relationship I was in being an obvious dead end and things were going bad at the time. I couldn't believe my luck that there was a near movie like moment in my life. Some average bloke. Never felt a connection like that with someone ever since. Crazy. Probably for the better. It will remain as a special and unforgettable memory. Something that happens when you're incredibly lucky and young. I don't have much luck nowadays and I'm not young anymore so that is something that'll stay in the time capsule.
