buy $100.00 bucks worth of socks, underwear, t-shirts at Uniqlo and all room bathroom needs at 7/11 or Familymart upon arrival and save the extra luggage fees. make that good yen rate work in your favor! travel light, you can do it! size up though! a lot!

Cheap but just add $70 each way for luggage fee. You are never going to make that 7kg limit

If you go, go in October. August is pure burning hell, and the summer continues throughout September these days.

On Amazon, I saw a carry-on style 18" suitcase that rollers can come off and can be used as "Personal item" on certain airlines. (The bag fits under the seat.) I am not sure the measurements for personal item on Zipair is, but the bag is too big for United "Personal bag". However, it can be used as "personal item" at other airlines, like American Airline, according to the Amazon item page.
I travel to Japan with carry-on suitcase and only half full of it for 2+ weeks. So, it's no impossible.

You're going to need that extra luggage for the trip back, though.

You don't need much and I filled my jacket pockets with all my heavy stuff. Coming back I checked my packable duffle that had all our trinkets between 2 people.

Good deal if you don't mind being in a sauna all day. Never again will I go to Japan during the summer months, no matter how cheap flights are.
