I have this router. Runs great. Firmware gets updated often. Also the range is good. The phone app to set this up makes everything easy. Very customizable. I have had a good experience with mine. Very few dropped signals. Only complaint is that this style of router is ugly if you have to put it in your living room.

Anyone got an opinion on this or the ASUS RT-AX86U?

I have a few WiFi 6E devices that could support the RT-AXE7800 but I also see the RT-AX86U pro is supported by the Asuswrt-Merlin project.

I have a Asus TUF 6000, which is ok but I'm hoping this has a stronger signal.

I've had the ax86u for the past 7 years or so and never had any issues. I bought a second one on sale about 3 years ago as backup or secondary to extend as a mesh network. My primary one hasn't failed and the signal is strong enough where I don't need to boost signal (through 2 different house moves. It's just that good.

Maybe I'm just too poor and need to get a bigger house?

Somewhat off topic in this thread, but I also have the TUF AX6000 running wireless backhaul to an AX3000. Recent firmware updates have caused intermittent wifi issues as of late. 5Ghz signal seems to be very weak now. It also didn't seem to like having another router run the Merlin firmware for AImesh. DongKnows says this one is good for wired backhaul https://dongknows.com/asus-rt-axe...er-review/

This or ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700)?

I don't care much about Merlin firmware and 6 GHz band.

Thanks for the feedback.I actually decided to pick up the RT-BE86U as the difference was about $60 for the used version over the RT-AX86U (BE86U 30% off vice AX86U 20% for prime day) and both are supported by the Merlin firmware. The 30% off for the BE-86U is also available on the new price.

I'd look at the size of your house as you aren't drowning in debt because you wanted something bigger lol.

My issue is interference. I live in a condo building and everyone has wifi so no matter where I am, even though my unit is pretty small, like 1,200 sq ft. Funny you said the AX3000, I bought some of those to see if it helps to "extend" the signals but they did not, just caused more interference.

When I was just researching between these two, I was looking for stability, longevity, and heavy traffic loads. From what I found the AX86U has better thermal properties and is more rock solid for my use case. If you don't need 6E speed, it's probably a better deal. And if any are still available on Amazon Resale, there is an additional 20% off.

I was using an AX86U (non-pro) for about 3 years with no problems. I had it anchoring an AX mini mesh system to get wifi coverage in the basement and outside in the backyard.
I found someone locally selling the RT-AXE7800 for super cheap so I decided to grab it and swap it in as my main router. Using the same mesh nodes, WiFi signal is not as strong. I started playing around with the AX86U and found out you can set the 2.5gb port as WAN (default is LAN). This helped improve download speeds, but doing a speed test head to head vs. the AXE-7800, download speeds were the same, but upload speeds were about twice as fast for the AXE7800, so I decided to keep using it.
About 1 month in, speeds are great. But there are some compromises; WiFi signal hasn't been as strong and coverage distance decreased (especially 5Ghz). 6Ghz band is pretty much limited to close proximity of the router (unless you have 6e mesh). The final issue has been that the 5Ghz band has started to disconnect periodically causing devices to lose Internet access. I have rebooted the AXE7800 twice so far, which temporarily fixes the 5Ghz disconnect issue. Hoping some future firmware update will be a permanent fix.

I haven't bought a router since 2014. I need something to blast wifi across an entire house. This looks alien tech, does the antennas powerful enough?

does this force you to use an app to set it up or will I be able to customize my settings from the web GUI?

are these really any good? I have the AC5300 and it's the biggest POS I have ever owned, totally unreliablethe AI mesh won't set up ,had to turn off literally every single advertised special feature to get it to even work at all, offered zero % improvement over my ac66U coverage sucks and is spotty AF even with the 12 antennas ,sitting on my media cabinet with my fire stick not even 10" away and constantly buffers and disconnects yet the fire TV stick in the other room is working when the one basically on top of the router is acting up, tried Merlin and it still sucks ,I have wanted to take a sledge hammer to this POS from Day one, I love the Asus interface but their routers are total trash. Also have a TUF MB and it has a bug where the white QLED stays on even though there is no problem, looked it up and it has been an issue for multiple generations and Asus never bothered to fix it. Asus just sucks and has garbage software and never fixes anything.I just can't trust them again.
