Why does Amazon say this tv is a frequently returned item? What am I missing?

Probably shipping issues or issues out of box.
Per Internets this tv is pretty good, $500 is pretty slick. Been $600 for months

Has to be shipping issues, I had to return my first one due to the whole package being damaged. I purchased direct from Amazon. Second time the delivery was smooth, and the TV itself is great 👍🏼

Still kicking myself in the ass for not picking up the Costco one with the extra warranty since it would have been delivered while on vacation.

You could've pushed the delivery to a time that worked for you. I show the YouTube to push a delivery out to the 26th, currently, so more than 2 weeks.

I realize that now, unfortunately it went out of stock extremely quickly here on the East Coast while I debated.

This is a great TV if you don't game. Local dimming is disabled in game mode on this TV, so the contrast will degrade substantially while gaming. The compromise was a very poor decision, imo.

If you only plan on watching TV and movies on the TV, though, this is a fantastic deal.

$2 cheaper [amazon.com] than OP and has the 4 year protection and the 2x HDMI cables.

https://a.co/d/gWEmdio This one has the soundbar. Although easy to skip it.

We got this tv to replace our plasma after watching popular reviewers comparing it to a Bravia 7. It's an okay mid-range tv, that's slightly better than the budget cheap tvs. It was worse than our plasma by a lot. Color accuracy was also a big problem and despite changing a lot of settings it was hard to get it to a good place (the presets were mostly not good). The high end oled tv's all look good in the presets alone. Fundamentally it seems its really hard to get amazing luminance contrast on leds despite the technolgical advances (you can either have a super bright picture with bad luminance contrast or a dull picture). If you fidget with it enough you can get a decent enough picture, but if you are used to oled/plasma it's not close (the picture just pops). Not sure if the highest of highest end minileds fix this but i have a feeling it's just a limitation of the technology. So if your expecting a premium picture quality, this isn't it. For the price it's not bad, but i wouldn't say it's significantly better than like a TCL for example. So you can probably get a larger screen for the price.

For 699 you can get the panasonic 65 oled on buydig, which i venture will be much much better. For 420 you can get a 75 inch TCL at best buy with local dimming. I think both of these are probably better options depending on your needs. I don't think this middle ground at 500 makes sense, despite on paper being good value (i now think mini leds are overrated). I am of the stance now you either go oled or get a low-mid range led. Led tvs look solid enough now days vs when they came out a decade plus ago at a super cheap price per inch and that's what they are good for. I think stores show a bunch of artificially bright demo content, and other content tailored to their strengths on led's making them seem better than they are.

Edit: all the comparisons were done side by side. If you just watch it without comparing you might initially get fooled that is a good picture because leds have made progress and closed the gap a bit.
