I've seen mixed reviews on this, some people saying sound quality is terrible and other saying it's "normal", at this price I think it's worth trying out and free returns if it doesn't meet expectations.

Just received them, they do sound pretty flat and unimpressive, I'd rate the sound quality lower than my older AirPods 2nd gen, but the ANC works pretty well. I wouldn't say they are horrible but definitely disappointing.

I don't have the 1st gen so I can't compare but based on reviews first gen sound a bit better with the downside of no ANC, shorter battery life, bigger case and bigger buds, I think most people recommend the pro 2 even at the expense of a bit of sound quality

Coming from the Powerbeats, Pro, and now Pro 2. Yes the sound quality is just good enough but these aren't for audiophiles. At the gym I want the buds to stay in place and be easy to control. Their size, weight, and matching physical buttons on each side achieves this. The noise cancellation is a great addition and battery life gets me through ~14hrs of use each week. My biggest adjustment is getting used to the body being formed into the play/pause button, can be easy to press when putting them on/in.

Is the bass decent with EQ settings? Primarily using these at the gym. Sound quality is such a subjective metric.

I use these because they stay put, the sound quality is good enough and IMO they are the best workout earbud if you have an iphone. They fit extremely well, don't ever have to worry about them falling out or sweat damaging them and they do sound as good as most 100$+ earbuds. If you want these for casual use and audio quality there are better options for sure.
