"Hey Google, play Bon Iver"

"Okay, playing the YouTube channel Mark Rober on workshop display"

"No, google play it on this speaker"

"Tris Speaker played center field for Boston and Cleveland in the early 1900s"

"Nevermind"

"Ok, glad to help!"

These used to be the best smart speakers. Now they are dumb

I would agree they've gotten dumb. Frequently the completely miss commands; or misinterpret commands. Same hardware I've always had so must be something in the software.

I have two close to each other and paired to make a "home group" that provides room filling stereo sound. This is a good deal but I wouldn't pay more for them.

These devices are transitioning from Google Assistant to Gemini. Google Assistant hasn't received any significant updates in years - both feature set and quality of responses have suffered as a result. As with any major software transition, you can expect Gemini to be glitchy.
cite a source that 'these devices' are transitioning to Gemini. The Android client is, but this device? I've seen nothing that makes me believe this product is anything but dead.

ps, i own 4 of them. same stupid ridged-google-assistant since day 1.

thx for the link. reading further than you by an inch - "only to Nest Aware subscribers" ($8/month)

but at least it appears to be coming to these speakers one day. so, thank you for that link, again.

I'm with one of the first posters... These speakers went from being super useful to steaming hot garbage. Before, you'd ask a question and 9 out of 10 times you'd get a good answer. Now, it gives irrelevant responses, the "hmm, I'm not sure." response, or doesn't even respond at all. If you have a smart display, it'll just give you a link on the display, which is useless for a speaker that I want to hear audible answers from. The only reason I still have these connected is that they work about 80% of the time to turn off my lights and play white noise.

Do these have Gemini yet? I have several Google Minis throughout my home and honestly the only reason I haven't replaced em' all with Alexa Dots yet is because of the ability to play uploaded music from my YouTube Music library. The Dots consistently do a much, much better job of actually understanding my commands... And they recently got "Alexa+ Early Access" which is absolutely delightful.

I turned on Preview Program for the Google Minis hoping they'll get Gemini to match the Alexa+ but so far no go.

Recently got a pair of these, I like them as speakers, I leave the mics off though.

Casting to a group is nice, I have them in adjacent rooms and it sounds great.

I keep expecting Google to release new ones, or for these to fall below $50 when they regularly go on sale, but neither has happened yet...
People found references to two new speakers (Nest Audio and Home Max) in the google home coding over a year ago. I keep putting off buying a new speaker because of it. Every once in awhile there is a sale on their speakers like this and they sell out and that triggers speculation that the new ones are coming out and then... it just doesn't happen. Things go on as usual. I'm finally pulling the trigger as I need a new speaker and it's only $50. You can all come back here and thank me if Google announces new speakers tomorrow laugh out loud

Google, like other major tech companies, are chasing after the big stuff. And they are willing to sacrifice perfectly functional products in the process.

In the case of these speakers, Google shifted its focus onto newer AI technologies. Originally the goal was to keep improving Google Assistant, which is built into these speakers. But when the shift went to Gemini, Google Assistant got left behind. Not only did Google Assistant stagnate, but I believe it actually got worse in many ways.

To keep Google Assistant working effectively, it required software maintenance on the part of Google and it's partners. As the landscape changed, Google Assistant has had frequent, reoccurring problems. Voice commands that work one day would stop working the next. And routines (instructions that are typed out, and thus consistent) would even have these problems, reducing the chance that the problem is with Google understanding the user's speech.

These speakers aren't bad. I already have several, and this deal is tempting me to get more. But I do agree with others that their "smart" performance has gotten worse. And if not actually worse, it might be that they have been inconsistent for years.

Can you expand on this?
Every time we ask it a question, it either says, "hmmm let do a web search for you" and it displays a google search. In the past, it would reply - "according to the abc.com website, ........"

and its all because google is more focused on Gemini, and Google Assistant will be in the dust soon - Source - https://www.androidpolice.com/sta...0Assistant.

When did you last do a voice training on your mobile device?

If it's not in the past year, you're not exactly a reliable source.

The reality is your speech changes over time due to a number of factors, even seasonally.

Intonation is a huge factor with voice recognition models.

Gemini has feature parity to Google Assistant.
.
Except it doesn't, several things I use in assistant simply don't work in Gemini (with my nest home mini)

In for 2 thanks. Sick of dealing with my HK Onyx Bluetooth speaker on my screen porch (pairing unpairing between multiple phones in the house), getting two of these for wifi music playback.

How is the sound on this? I would be interested in using it purely as a garage speaker. Otherwise would probably grab a ~$100-~$150 bluetooth speaker.
