Do you still have the cart inserted for it to work? I have a switch 2 and this virtual cartridge stuff is weird

For Switch 1 I can confirm yes, you need the cart inserted to play after you download the game. I don't think Switch 2 operates differently but I've had no experience with it.

If it didn't, people would abuse it and get the "licenses" and then sell/return the cart.

Still $60 on PC, unfortunately. And all of these are slightly worse than the original releases, unless you play them on PC and use mods to fix the minor issues with controls and graphics.

Check out what happens when fans try to update an older game: here's a video of the Moguri Mod [youtube.com] for Final Fantasy 9, which adds widescreen support and tons of convenient features and high resolution graphics.

But when professional game company tries it, it's just "we dumped some old games on a disc and have them run via emulator, sorry about the bugs it introduced. But we're going to charge the same price as if we just created Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption 2." At least Konami included multiple games and they're not a buggy mess, like the re-released game efforts from Blizzard and Square Enix and Rockstar.

Check the cartridge, it has indicators to tell you the type of game you are buying. They can be found on the bottom of the cartridge label, black box with white lettering. Format is ??-XXXXX-XXX-0 where ?? is any of the following:

LN - Full Switch 1 game on cartridge.
LP - Digital license on a cart.
LB - Full Switch 2 game on cartridge.

The X's are arbitrary numbers that Nintendo uses to identify games.

The game listed in the OP would be a LN cartridge, so full Switch 1 game on cartridge.
