Bought a few of these on clearance at a discount sporting goods store once. The straight deet is effective, but spraying it is an assault on your lungs. Hold your breath, don't spray near your face, avoid bare skin...

You're better off doing a permethrin wash for the clothes you wear out hiking, TBH. Just don't let your pets get close to the clothes.

Specifically cats - permethrin is very toxic to cats.

I don't like aerosols for bug spray. Seems they always fail to spray their entire contents.

If you're like me, this is a good one:

Right. I wasn't sure if it was harmless to dogs. It's also toxic, albeit less so, to ferrets.

I've got cats, so I can only repeat what my vet told me about them. I use permethrin around the house and I got a strong word of caution.

Permethrin, in my opinion, is the best for stopping bugs in their tracks. It doesn't last very long though.

Bifenethrin is the next best choice for a long term barrier.

I also have cats, and our backyard is a hub for ferals (we do TNR for the local colonies), which means we have to settle for less effective mosquito control solutions - mostly dunk buckets - but we have permethrin infused outerwear in the (cat free) basement for hiking.
