This is a lot of machine for the money. Yes, the pci speeds aren't maximized, but if you need that you aren't buying this.

I wonder how the thermals would do with it fully maxed out. Most of us would put an enterprise card of some sort in that pcie slot which would require lots of fan support

Does using the occulink change the thermals?

I don't think so. The Oculink Device will be outside the Mini PC and here the OCuLink port is directly coming from motherboard, not by using a M.2 to OCulink Card.

If I am going to spend this much money, I would rather build my own machine, where I get to pick the mainboard, power supply, etc. There is bound to be a weak link in this package where if one component fails it is not easily swapped out.

Since this is a new product, no review as of now. But Minisforum devices normally come with pretty solid cooling solution, better than most other chinese companies. From the images and videos in the product page, looks like it is using dual Coaxial 9225 Fans for cooling the HDD cage.

Maybe you're talking about a different Minisforum to the one I know where their thermals are invariably crap and the source of problems for many owners. Oh, and their customer service is non-existent.

We all know how angry you are on Minisforum and how good you think another specific brand is.

I mean, they did have their liquid metal disaster, but I haven't heard much against them lately in terms of cooling, at least no more than any other micro PC form factor.

This is pretty tempting to me, I just wish the CPU had some more reviews or benchmarks, the rumor mill around them didn't look good 6mo ago, but rumor mills do often blow things out of proportion.
I would love laptop grade power consumption in a less strained server, and I like all the expandability.

This is my concern too. A long-term tech and community support is super important. It's NAS machine and robustness of the system is a priority.

That Ryzen 7 255 has thousands of reviews but I think you got confused due to the naming change. This is just a rebranded Hawk Point Ryzen 7 8845H Zen4 APU, which is a Ryzen 7 8845HS but the NPU has been disabled.

There seems to be a general consensus in the comments regarding this company. Perhaps he isn't the fan boy in this thread.
