I would recommend buying from B&N if you can, because Amazon only price matches sales that other retailers do. If B&N stops these sales, Amazon would never lower the price of Criterion movies on their own.

The same way they price matched Best Buy and Target right out of the physical media retail space…

They allow you watch the movie after inserting the disc, instead of loading up anti piracy notifications, trailers, ads and production company logos.

What's so special about the criterion collection sets? I follow their Criterion closet interviews on YouTube, which are great.

Their transfers are usually very good, often reference material.

Normally I'd try to support the retailer who originates the sale (Amazon merely copies Barnes & Noble). However, the last two Criterion sales I ordered from Barnes & Noble and more than half of each order arrived destroyed... and then by the time I received them and requested replacements, there were out of stock and I ended up having to order from Amazon anyway lol.

Ordered Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Mulholland Drive, and Anora with 15% cashback. Grabbed Happiness and Paper Moon cheap on Walmart.

I highly recommend their remaster of Paper Moon. Beautiful.

Exactly. Whenever I see a price drop on Amazon, I try to figure out if they're price matching someone else and buy it there instead. This sale is/was a no-brainer in that department, but Amazon's price drops seem to mostly occur only in reaction to other retailers.

They do (mostly) good transfers, lots of bonus materials, they don't do limited editions, their sales are consistent and predictable, the sale prices reasonable, and on average they offer higher-quality films than other boutiques. What's NOT to like about Criterion?

P.S. Oh, and if you ever get a bad disk, which has only ever happened to me once, their customer service is excellent.

Long time collector but at this point the only real value they have is simply buying the rights to films you can't get elsewhere. For those that have a different 4k or Blu-ray release it is rare for it to be worth the price difference any longer.

They do have some great movies in the collection that you can't really get in high quality physical with a USA release elsewhere. But they have also released a ton of terrible films in the last 10years that wouldn't have been up to previous standards.

The criterion closet is a joke. The highly successful people don't even buy their so called favorites with their own money?
