Not too shabby. All black is about the least ugly they get I suppose. I have the Mach 5 and they've been good for my 3-5 mile runs around time with even wear so far.

How do these compare to the Asics Gel Kayano 30 or 31 for stability and support? Are they similar or no?

No, not at all. These are just a standard runner for a neutral gate. Not good for flat feet or overpronators like the Kayano is. I love the Kayano, tried Hoka's version not too long ago, hated it.

Anytime you need to check, what you are looking for is a "Stability" shoe. Not just a shoe that says something about a "Stable" stride or whatever. But a actual stability shoe.

Forget about the '30s. It's the 31s for the win... These hokas in this particular model aren't even in the same league as the 31. So you either get the 31s or the nimbus 27s.. both have roomier toe boxes so if you have trouble in a colorway finding a wider size you can just go up a half size or so.

Without a doubt, the two best running shoes this year and I've got over 25 pairs. Is the nimbus 27 and the kayano 31s.

Dick's had the 31s for $99 in that bizarre mango colorway but everything's up to about 164 on the 31s but I wouldn't get any of the Hokas unless you're going to get The Bondi or if you can afford it you can kick some ass and not look like an octogenarian with the skyward X.

I have a pair of the skyward. X , nimbus 27s and kayano 31s... And that Max cushioning man you can lay the miles down.

They're also just pretty good for wearing around. If you're just going to wear around, I don't know. I guess I would look maybe at the cliftons... But you're looking like a boomer wearing those. I'd get the skyward X and just bite the $220 bullet

Just walk the perimeter of your fence; you should eventually find a gate.

These were returned at my Costco today. I tried them on. Would not recommend for over pronation. It felt as if the heel was tilting my foot inwards. Upper fabric was cheap and thin.

So the easiest way to know if you are flat foot or overpronate is the water test. Link to a page that talks about it at the bottom of the post. Honestly though it's REALLY hard to go wrong with the Kayano, especially the 30+ series where they made them a LOT plusher, but still stability designed. A lot of people even with neutral or high arches like the Kayano line (hence why it's Asics #1 seller for... 32 years?).

The below is a pretty good overview/explanation. One dead giveaway is anyone who walks "like a penguin" with their toes pointed outward probably has flat feet or overpronates. Like 90% of the time that is just flat feet and your body muscle memory trying to find the most efficient way to walk with incorrectly "designed" feet. I walked liked that when I was a kid and through my early 20s. After 3-4 years in stability shoes though my gait naturally moved inward (literally no effort on my part) and now I walk heel to toe.

Honestly though if you do have flat feet, stability shoes are life changing. When I was 16 I ran 2 hours of basketball a day, weight 110 lbs less and that was over 20 years ago and my legs, knees and hips can handle more miles per day now than they could then just because of the shoe difference.

The biggest problem with stability shoes is the fit matters a LOT. Like going a half size up or down can take the Kayano from "that's a nice shoe" to me watching people's jaw drop open in confusion at how good it feels. I am copying and pasting my post from a thread last year about how fit matters and why.

Stability shoes are for people who overpronate or have flat feet. They have a stiffening piece in the arch area that helps prevent the shoes from breaking down. A lot of science, but the long and short of it is this. These shoes will feel exactly the same when you buy them as they will in 500 miles. If you have flat feet (like I do) you know that within just a few weeks your "new" shoes will feel the same as the pair you just replaced. Not so with shoes designed for overpronators. ALSO and this is hugely massively important, because there is a stiffener in the arch it means that sizing is VERY VERY particular. If the shoe is too small the stiffener will hit in your heel and feel like trash. If it's too big it will hit in your footpad and feel like trash. Also just an opinion of someone who has sold shoes for 5+ years almost everyone reading this is probably wearing .5-1.5 sizes too small. I would say well over 60% of the people I help get shoes are too small, part of that is that as you get older your arch will fall (just like your skin and boobs lol) and if you straighten out a curve it gets longer. You almost certainly should not be wearing the same size you did in HS but most people do.
