Long-term use of diphenhydramine (brand name Benadryl) may be associated with an increased risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, particularly in older adults. Other potential long-term effects include cognitive impairment, memory problems, and anxiety. Additionally, some individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms when stopping diphenhydramine.
Just friendly FYI, stuff is cheap, but it slowly destroys your brain over time. Take Allegra or Fexofenadine instead, your brain will thank you.

With all this talk of this stuff causing dementia, how about Costco's Kirkland signature sleep aid pills, which have the same active ingredient as Unisom Sleeptabs. (doxylamine succinate : 25 mg) ?

Is this all drugs in its class? I use Unisom which is another type of antihistamine
I would read the instructions, which likely say short term use only. Then ask your doctor.

Also note that poor sleep has a strong link to dementia and poor health. Ask your doctor during your annual physical. I used to take a THC gummy every night for sleep, but then committed to 30 days of proper sleep hygiene, and never slept better:
Eye mask, room at 65, 3-2-1 method for food, drink, phone, removed tv from room, sunlight 1st thing upon waking, and most importantly a consistent wake up time 7 days per week.

Thanks to all who posted. I don't sleep well, but try to avoid taking anything on a regular basis.

Based on the very little I've read, it sounds like it's anticholinergic use particularly in elderly, not all ages who use anticholinergics such as diphenhydramine/benadryl.
I doubt using something like this every day is great for you though, there's probably better/more permanent ways to alleviate someone's sleep issues than taking benadryl.
Personally I only use it for occasional allergies. It makes me way too sleepy to use consistently.

Anyone having problems with insomnia should take magnesium. Magnesium deficiency might not be detectable by a blood test and insomnia is one of many symptoms. Magnesium will likely not help for at least a month, it takes time for it to be effective.

I managed to get off of Ambien and Melatonin with a more natural approach:

This helps me fall asleep: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072JFM...in_title_2
This keeps me asleep: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DKRYH...ix=magneiu

Please don't call this drug 'natural' . You're morally deceiving consumers and may face liability.

I can confirm that this has withdrawal effects. When I stopped taking it, I couldn't sleep at all. If I don't take it, I don't sleep. Now that I read it's unsafe, can anyone recommend something safer? Things like melatonin are too weak for me, I need something stronger.

Thanks for the advice. But Fexofenadine is an anti-drowsy antihistamine. It might cause the same drowsiness as aspirin, but a sleeping aid is not one of its uses.

There is even stronger research that suggests that persistent lack of sleep/sleep deprivation/persistent sleep interruptions significantly increase the risk of Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases. There's way more evidence supporting persistent insomnia as being dangerous for your brain than Benadryl.
Of course there are better ways to treat insomnia, but taking an allergy pill every so often is better than nothing.

Not saying don't take it, use it but don't abuse it. Not getting enough sleep will kill your brain too. Talk to your doctor.
