I had a 13900K, it fried itself. I replaced it with the 13600k and it's been running more reliably and actually faster than my 13900k did. I believe they updated the microcode to fix their hardware bug and it only affected the 9-series with their high TDP.

Sadly, as an early purchaser of the 13900k before the updates, that left me with a dead CPU and no recourse from Intel. My 13600k has been running stable, albeit I don't have all the cores of the 13900k. I was very disappointed by intel on this one with their flagship CPU. I didn't know the i5s were affected, but I should be in the clear now.

I am new to PC building, can you update the BIOS before even sticking the CPU in? (Motherboard is NZXT Z790, no BIOS button, and Intel ArcB580)

I am new too so I cannot give a lot of details on how to do it but I know that you can for sure update the motherboard before installing the CPU

You'll have to check your motherboard's manual to see if you can do it. Most modern motherboard are able to be updated by sticking a USB drive in the right USB port on the mobo and then clicking a button or a series of buttons.

Not on all boards; many cannot. The mid- and higher end boards allow you to insert a USB stick in an unpopulated motherboard and update the BIOS that way, though.

Intel has a 5 year warranty on their CPUs, don't they? You should just be able to call (email ) them up and get it replaced, yes?

I have had a i7-14700K for a while. Put it on a MB that I flashed the newest BIOS/Microcode on. No issues so far. Running it air cooled in a good case and it doesn't get too hot. As someone mentioned, all these CPU's have a five year warranty through intel. Keep your receipt and you'll get a new one if it really does fail.

You should be covered. Have your proof of purchase and email Intel for a replacement.

With it being a K series processor, I believe you forfeit Intel warranties when you opt to overclock the K series.

Assuming that was done, could see them being unable to warranty claim it.

Edit: It appears overclocking can void warranty if it is deemed that caused damage to the CPU.

It doesn't effect all chips just some. My 13900K has been running at work 24/7 since launch no issues. We had a 14900K that didn't last a few months because of the issue. I feel like in the real world Intel has shipped far more 13th/14th gen chips than AMD so there are a ton out there still running fine. Not to say it's not an issue, but I feel like it's extremely low chance to have issues on a I5 chip.
