I don't understand why so many prepared foods have SO MUCH SALT ADDED... Anybody here that knows? Is it for taste purposes? Preservation purposes?

They could easily do 50% less salt, and put "add salt to taste" or something.

Salt is great, but too much of it isn't, and eating prepared foods ensures one is eating way too much salt.

Preservatives purposes mostly, also a flavor enhancer. Several years ago (Obama era I think?), several preservatives were banned in the US and EU, so back to salt everyone went.
