Anyone can comment if this is a good fit for a total guitar-ignorant who has recently been hit by the sudden urge to pick up guitar?

I believe Les Paul is a renowned brand so it's probably more than enough for me.

I learned electric on an Epiphone LP and it worked well. This one doesn't have some features that mine had (adjustable intonation, separate volume and tone), but it's a solid guitar to learn on.

The tuners and bridge may be a bit finicky, but I'd say it's a solid guitar for a beginner. It'll help you get an idea for what you like, want, and would not want in a future guitar

LP's are usually really heavy. I can't comment on this one, but it may be worthwhile to pick it up and just strum it. Trust me, for a novice, a heavy guitar can be a burden and introduce shoulder/neck pain (on top of finger pain..ha) that'll discourage you from practicing. I started with an Epi Casino because I liked the way it looked, but it was super-uncomfortable and sold it.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably pickup a nice Squier Strat or Jazzmaster (frequently on sale and really nice guitars for beginners). They have a nice scallop to contour to your gut/side and just an all-around comfy guitar. The LPs are NOT comfy....
Check out the "Squier Sonic Stratocaster Limited-Edition Electric Guitar (Surf Green)" that posted here a couple days ago for ~ $160. That's a nice starter.
