I sort of, not really, but kinda want to get into guitar.... buddy of mine who owns like 12 guitars, recommended bass since I lack ...eh.... musical ability? Supposedly bass is easier to learn/play.

Any thoughts on this for an adult beginner? 200 or under is def the right price range

go for it. It is mainly about rhythm. It is important to keep learning things as an adult, it keeps the brain healthy.

Bass isn't "easier" to play but it doesn't involve learning chords unless you want to necessarily. Do you have good rhythm? It's more of a rhythm percussion instrument than guitar is.

As far as this bass goes it's likely great for anyone who plays bass.

any good (cheap/free) online tools for learning outside YT?

And won't I have to buy a cheap amp/monitor or something?

It's a standard scale bass guitar and these days even cheap ones are decent quality. As far as easier, if you're just playing the root note (like in a lot of rock) it can be very easy. If you are relegated to just playing root notes in rock songs it can get mighty boring. But that's not really all there is to bass. But when you really get into playing it's not necessarily much easier, just different, and you need to stretch a bit farther. Also, the bass and drums hold down the rhythm section in sync together.

I'm sure your buddy means well. It's a common misconception that bass is "easier" than guitar.
If you want to get into guitar like you say, then buy a cheaper guitar. There's lots of well made options that won't break the bank.

Rocksmith 2014. But you may have to find it by alternative means.

Unless you're a really big guy with large hands, a 30" scale bass may be better to start with.

This is dangerously close to impulse buy territory.
