I actively try to look for either refills or cardboard spools. I used to have TONS of left-over plastic spools - and just no real use for them outside of winding Christmas lights and extension cords on them. Seems like such a waste for me to just throw them away. At least the cardboard spools are recyclable, or compostable.

I don't have a system with an AMS yet, though the one for my Elagoo CC is supposed to be announced in the near future. I've heard of the problems that ill-fitting spools can cause in the AMS.

The AMS pro rolls the filament and when it's cardboard. It does not end well. I have to wrap it with a cover. Easily printed or transfer transferred to an empty Bambu plastic spool. AMS on a single filament holder. I find that the bamboo plastic filament just rolled better where the cardboard sometimes can get caught and makes the fill in harder to pull.

Ams lite. I feel the same. I just don't have as much success with cardboard spools

Cardboard is no fun in the ams lite - imho. I didnt notice until i started swapping out more often and then said to myself that I will no longer do cardboard unless i do something with transfer to older plastic rolls

I'm pretty new to the hobby. I stumbled upon YOUSU after visiting this deal on Amazon. They don't seem as cheap, but have glow in the dark and glitter options. Are those even reliable?

There is a 3rd option which is easier than both you mentioned. You can print an adapter (many options available on Makerworld) that just snaps on to the cardboard spools in a couple seconds. It's a short print that uses minimal filament. I have a bunch of them ready to be used when I put new rolls in to the AMS. I do use electrical tape every so often when a cardboard spool is bent enough that an adapter won't fit on properly.I like the convenience of plastic spools as well but not at the expense of some of the better filaments that are on cardboard spools. Some of the plastic rolls aren't perfect in the AMS either when you get towards the end of the roll and they aren't heavy enough to the point where they don't roll properly in the AMS
I've been using these for cardboard spools, no issues so far. They print in about 20 mins 6g each. I even take them off and move to new rolls. so reusable until they break

Thank you for this information because my H2D and AMS Pro are going to be arriving today and I have purchased some creality PLA hyper series filament because it came pretty cheap with the PiSpace X4 filament dryer I purchased in addition to a huge discount on the filament storage box creality sales. If anybody knows how to modify or make these spools work with the new AMS unit please let me know

Same, they work pretty well. I still prefer plastic spools when available.

Some pro tips from mistakes I've made w/ these adapters:

Measure your spool as they often have slightly different adapters that are 1-2 mm smaller.

When drying, DRY FIRST before printing adapters because often the cardboard shrinks or warps a little changing the diameter.

Ime in the AMS, always print the flat profile, I've printed the rounded profile once and didn't realize for a bit that it was rubbing against the cover. I've never had an issue with the PLA adapters I've printed in "gripping" the rollers in the AMS.

Be careful when drying with these adapters if you print out of PLA. I had a roll of PETG with PLA adapters and when drying at 70C, the adapters sort of melted and became unusable.

I bough some 3DHOJOR Silk Gold awhile back and absolutely love it, was surprised how well it looked! Loved the comment from another poster in this thread that this is one of the best gold silks they've seen...in for 4! I have a filament problem as well...since starting end of last year I have ~100 rolls with ~ half open and in 3 dry boxes...such a fun hobby, I had no idea how addicting it would be...

This seems like a great price for the PTEG. Anyone have any experience with it? Usually seems like to get these sorts of prices (sub $10) you're stuck with black, grey or white. Kind of nice to be able to get some colors for this cheap.

they don't necessarily need to be modified, but it's generally better to print adapters (or use electrical tape on the edges) to help them roll better and prevent a build up of cardboard dust inside.

As mentioned, the adapters print super quick, so I'd do that first thing with your printer.

Go on makerworld to see if someone printed a spool "ring" for that filament. I use it on Elegoo and one other brand's so AMS (the older one) will roll better.

I don't have the newest AMS pro that came out with H2D

Any experience with the silver? I bought Jayo PLA silk silver before and it doesnt look as nice as the gold. Not sure if this is a different run?
