E*TRADE up to 1% Savings Bonus

Key facts:
  • Base Interest Rate of Account is 4%, variable.
  • $250/$500/$750 bonus on $25k/$50k/$75k in savings account.
  • $25k/$50k/$75k must be funded within 30 days of account opening.
  • Amount must be kept in account for 45 days after the initial 30 days.
  • $5k average monthly balance required to waive $15 fee.
  • I don't know when bonus is paid. My guess would be on the last day of the third statement cycle, around day 90-ish.
  • Interest compounds daily.
  • Interest paid monthly, with accrued interest paid for account closing between statements.
  • Bonus is taxable, like all banking/brokerage bonuses.
  • I do not know if E*TRADE files a 1099 on bonuses under $600. Most banks do, but some do not.

Note: I have used E*TRADE for a long time. They play games with their savings accounts, in that every few years, they come out with a "new high rate savings account", and anyone with the "old high rate savings account" has to switch or get screwed. I don't think that will happen in the next 120 days, since this is their "new-new HYSA", not their "old-new HYSA". I would anticipate the 4% rate to move with the market for at least the next year or so. But, one day, they will come out with a new savings account and tank this one to under 1% interest. I wouldn't keep the account long-term for that reason.

Haven't done full math, but this will math out to an APY of about 8%. The logic:
- Base rate is 4%
- An additional 1% paid over 90 days is roughly another 4% APY, since 90 days is 1/4 of a year.

A little higher APY if you game it by withdrawing earlier (deal requires 75 days), or deposit later (deal requires deposit before day 30, not day 1). I wouldn't try to game it that way myself.

Thank you - Added YMMV information.

I got it without an email, just signing into my E*TRADE account, on first page along with my accounts.

The link doesn't seem to mention anything about eligibility to those that got the email...?

i'm not following the logic nor where the extra % is coming from, but i'll transfer all my funds if i can get 8% APY somewhere...

First, it's not detailed math, it's a rough "in-head" estimate. And, for it to work, "all your funds" has to be either $25k, 50k, or 75k.

Basic logic:
- The account pays 4% APY without a bonus.
- You get a 1% bonus on a $25k/$50k/$75k deposit, within 90 days.
- There are about 4 90 day cycles in a year (90x4=360, close to 365)
- So, 1% over 90 days is roughly a 4% APY for the bonus alone, without the base interest.
- 4% base interest APY + 4% bonus APY = 8% APY.

If anyone wants to do a more detailed analysis, calculating IRR based on the correct inflows and outflows, more power to them, but 8% is close enough for my purposes.

Was going to partake, but after reading several comments about etrade here:

https://dealquestnow.online/f/18128029-require-eligibilty-open-new-checking-account-at-etrade-and-get-300-cash-bonus-after-qualifying-direct-deposit

I think I'll hold off. Juice not worth the squeeze.

2 comments about the bonus not being paid or slow to pay and an ambiguous one. Not exactly over the top bad reviews. This is your evidence?

More concerned about their locking of accounts and ghosting customers that complain. Plenty of stories on reddit a well, more than similar banks/brokerages.
