Because cardboard spools don't play nicely with the AMS.

You shouldn't need to dry it every time as long as you keep it in a sealed container, ideally with desiccant. You'll have to be more specific about how it's "a complete disaster" to get good advice on avoiding that.

You mean it doesn't fit the AMS *Lite*, which isn't the same as the AMS, in which these work just fine.

Why is a plastic spool a good thing? I'd have thought after accumulating a couple dozen, any useful repurposing would be exhausted.
Plastic spools (for my use case) is better than cardboard because Amazon likes to smoosh the cardboard boxes before shipping.

I originally thought it was my eSun filament that was giving me issues a while back, turns out I went back and looked again... It was the spools being wavy due to being smooshed on transit.

So now, I go seeking plastic spools, and you've given me a great idea to go ahead and respool everything from paper over to plastic! (I kept all my spools over time... It's in a pile in the corner, I don't know what i'll do with them, but one day I will find something lol)

No one has this issue. It is what Bambu claimed but lacks any real world confirmation.
I've absolutely had issues with cardboard spools with my Bambu Labs X1C. So much so that I've had to print plastic treads to go around the edges of cardboard spools because they slip on the rollers of the AMS

The last print I did I had spots holes where the filament almost flaked off. There were tiny "fuzzy" pellets of filament all over the printer. This is on a p1s. It was very strange. I have never seen anything like it.

Fits my AMS just fine
AMS Lite is the one where the size of the hole matters because the spool mounts on a holder. AMS [heavy] is the one where the spool sits on a set of rollers so the material from which the spool is made matters but not the size of the hole.

Can anyone recommend a good 3d printer without breaking bank?
I like Bambu Lab A1 mini $220 at Micro center.
$350 with the multi material system.

It is well built, very easy to use and the nozzle is very easy to change out.

I think you mean AMS Lite. The regular AMS doesn't care.

Ah okay it wasn't specified in the earlier comment I replied to. Thanks for clarifying!

My experience was initially that cardboard is fine. Which it is at first. But after a couple of brands and filaments I found that some have CA glued cardboard ends that roll great on the rollers but most don't. Some cardboard spools are bigger than others and some bigger on one side vs the other and some not 100% round. These can bind up on the AMS lid which creates the need for an AMS lid riser to resolve it. Generally as the spool gets low it gets light and it jumps around and that's where you bind up and have to babysit it or else add weights to the middle of the spool. Over time the cardboard creates dust on the rubber rollers and causes slippage as well. I've found that the adapters you can print are quick and cheap but you should print the ones specific to the brand. The universal ones suck and will just slip and waste more filament than using a specific simple adapter.

The Ender 3 V3 SE is a very good printer for cheap. Can't go wrong for $220.

Agree. I've had tons of issues and made a python AMS to combat them.

The comment I replied to was about the complaint of cardboard dust. Cardboard can bend easily, especially when the manufacture vacuum seals it. Making sure the sides are straight will solve that issues.

I've been using cardboard spools with my AMS' for 2 years now with zero issues. I believe its only an issue if the edges haven't been sealed.

It's 199 at bestbuy, free shipping! goes in and out of stock if you keep an eye on it, easy to get. I've gotten myself and a few people them without trying.

Plenty of other good brands same price of cheaper on Amazon. No deal here unless you insist on this brand for some reason.
